Scots outlast the Owls in a compelling fashion

Batesville, AR - The Lyon College Scots secured a decisive 82-59 victory over The Mississippi University for Women Owls in a physical matchup at Becknell Gymnasium. Scots would pull away in the second half after a tightly contested opening period. With the win, Scots advance to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

Colbie West lead the Scots in points by putting away 19 points and lead the team with six rebounds. West would go 7-7 at the free throw line as well. Xavier Sorrell recorded five rebounds and got up for two blocks and a steal. Cameron Williford lead the team in assists with four and  contributed five points to the scoreboard.

The game started with the Owls jumping out to an early 8-6 advantage in the first half. Lyon quickly fought back, tying the game twice, including an 8-8 tie after a jumper from Trevon Taylor. MUW briefly regained momentum with a three-pointer from Trent Walker and a fastbreak layup, building a 13-8 lead midway through the period. Halfway through the first, Kenneth Brown made key layups, eventually bringing the score to a tie at 13-13 MUW responded again, reaching their largest lead of seven points, 26-19, with under five minutes remaining in the half after a MUW free throw. But Lyon's Colbie West and Brody Tucker helped claw back, tying the game at 30-30 and eventually ending the first half in a 34-34 deadlock.

The second half saw Lyon take command of the game, ultimately securing a decisive victory. The period opened with a physical start with Lyon's Colbie West hitting free throws to take the lead, 34-36, but MUW quickly tied it up. The teams traded leads briefly, with MUW going up 40-39 on an Owl's jumper. However, Lyon responded with a 4-0 run, highlighted by a West layup and free throws, establishing a 40-43 lead they would not relinquish. A crucial moment occurred midway through the half when Lyon went on a 10-0 run, featuring a Kenneth Brown three-pointer and a Georges Archer dunk, pushing their advantage to 44-54. MUW struggled to keep pace, failing to hit a three-pointer in the entire second half. Lyon's bench proved vital, contributing 31 total points in the game. Brody Tucker hit key three-pointers late in the period, extending the lead to 51-67. The Scots dominated rebounding and converted second-chance points, allowing them to pull away and finish the game with an 82-59 win.

Scots will comeback after Thanksgiving break to face Greenville University Thursday, December 4th at 7:30 PM.
