Batesville, AR - Lyon College Scots fought hard but saw their season come to an end, falling in a close four sets (23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 21-25) to the #6 seed Webster University Gorloks in the quarterfinal round of the St. Louis Intercolligiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Fighting Scots finish their season 14-15 overall and 7-7 in SLIAC Conference play. This was their first season with the ability to compete in conference championships, since becoming an active NCAA Division III member earlier this year.
Set one began with both teams close, as every time one took the lead, points would be scored to make it even. Keely Beary would scratch the first kill, this would be followed by two more from
Isabel Cervantes, 4-4. Webster would answer with two of their own, but a 5-0 run with two kills from Molllie McCoy, a kill from
Cristen Cleveland, and a kill from
Avery Fuller would give Scots the lead 9-6. Gorloks would overtake and extend their lead, but Scots tied it with another kill from McCoy set up by Cervantes, 11-11. Scots would gain the lead off a block from Beary and Cervantes, and kills from
Sofia Santis and Fuller, 19-15. A kill by the Gorloks would set up a run that would tie the set and begin an exchange of points. McCoy would send two kills to the hardwood, but after each the Gorloks would respond with a point of their own, 21-20. A Cervantes kill would put the Scots on top, but a blocking error would give the advantage back to the Gorloks who would take the first set on a block and kill.
In the second set Scots were down to start, but
Madeline Hopson would set the ball to notch three assists, while McCoy would drive in three kills and Beary would lay down a block to fuel a comeback, 16-16. Fuller would record a service ace, Beary would score off a block, and errors from Webster would add Lyon's lead, 20-17. Gorloks would tie it off errors by the Scots, but kills from Twist and Cervantes both assisted by Hopson, as well Twist's service ace would hand the Scots set point, 24-21. A setting error by the Gorloks would put a win on Lyon's sheet.
Third set, same as the first. Both teams would trade scores to start but a McCoy kill and a Hopson ace put the Scots up, 8-7. Gorloks would respond with a 7-0 run to take the lead, 14-8. Scots would battle back with kills from Cleveland, Fuller, McCoy, and Cervantes zipping over top to close the lead to two points, 17-15. Gorloks would extend the lead again, but Twist would follow on with a kill, and Scots would get two points off errors still down, 21-19. Two fast kills from the Gorloks and an error by the Scots prepared the set point, 24-19. A kill by Beary assisted by Hopson and a Webster error, lifted Scots spirits but the final kill was driven in.
Webster would take a nine point lead early, 12-3, but Scots fought back with an offensive push which fueled kills from Harrelson, McCoy, Beary and created multiple situations for Gorlok errors. With all of that Scots were still down six, 16-10, but a seven point drive containing kills from Beary, Harrelson, Cervantes, McCoy and a Harrelson block close the lead to only one point. Webster would score their four points off errors but, McCoy and Twist would drive in two kills to make it a two point game, 20-18. Webster would keep their lead, 23-21, but another kill from Twist and Beary as well as a Gorloks error would keep it close. Gorloks would take the match off a kill and service ace.
McCoy notched 14 kills leading the team, she added three digs as well. Hopson was a key piece of the offense as she got the assist on 22 kills, she scratched one ace, and she also contributed defensively recording ten digs. Cleveland sent eight kills to the floor, added on a service ace, and contributed ten digs. Cervantes had a double-double recording 17 assists and 11 digs. Beary was up for three blocks and drove in seven kills. Santis contributed greatly on defense with 13 digs, she helped offensively with four assists and and one kill.
This marked the Lyon College Fighting Scots volleyball team's first appearance in the SLIAC Conference Tournament, hopefully the first of many in the years to come.
