Scots fall to Austin College after a hard-fought comeback

Sherman, TX – Austin College jumped out to an early lead over the Lyon College Scots, carrying their advantage into halftime. The Scots battled back to even the score in the second half, but the momentum slipped away late as the Kangaroos pulled ahead. Lyon opens the season at 0–2.

Natalya Kaza led the Scots offensively with 17 points, knocking down three of her five attempts from beyond the arc. Kaysharia Woods added eight points while dishing out a team-high seven assists. Savanna Lopez posted a strong all-around performance with eight points and a team-leading eight rebounds, while Alyssa Abascal followed closely with seven boards of her own.

The Scots fell behind early as the Kangaroos opened the game on a 3–0 run before Kaysharia Woods put Lyon on the board with a free throw. Austin College continued their momentum until Alyssa Abascal broke the stretch with a basket in the paint to make it 8–3. Molly Mason followed with a score of her own to trim the deficit to three, but another Kangaroos run pushed the margin back out before Camya Porter stopped it at the line, bringing the score to 20–6. Lyon chipped away late in the quarter, but Austin College carried a 30–15 lead into the break.

In the second period, Woods and Kaza connected to spark the offense with a three-pointer. Abascal then forced a turnover that turned into a fastbreak layup, cutting the score to 34–24. The Scots continued to inch closer as several timely buckets tightened the gap. Near the end of the quarter, Kaza drilled another three to bring Lyon within four, but the Kangaroos held on to a 38–34 advantage at halftime.

Lyon opened the third quarter with momentum as Savanna Lopez knocked down a shot in the paint to make it 38–36. Moments later, Natalya Kaza struck from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to 42–39. Paris Haliburton added a bucket inside with an assist from Woods, but a string of turnovers stalled the Scots' rhythm and allowed the Kangaroos to rebuild their lead, sending Lyon into the final quarter trailing 51–45.

The Scots looked to shift the momentum in the fourth as both teams traded baskets, with Kaza driving in for a layup to pull Lyon within six. A layup and a series of jumpers from Kaza and Coi Bradley brought the game all the way back to a tie. However, the Scots hit a wall offensively, and the Kangaroos regained control down the stretch. Forced to foul in the final minutes, Lyon would ultimately fall 82–62.

Up next, Scots will stay in Texas to face the University of Dallas Crusaders Saturday, November 15th at 6:00 PM.
