Scots fall to Crowley's Ridge in close fifth set

Paragould, AR - Despite four sets being decided by three points or fewer (18-25,22-25,26-24,29-27,13-15), Lyon College volleyball couldn't edge out a win against the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers. With this loss Scots are now 8-10 for the season and remain 4-3 in SLIAC play. 

The Pioneers took the lead early in the first set, 7-4, but Isabel Cervantes would close the lead to two off a kill from Caroline Snow, 8-6. Crowley's Ridge would respond scoring points to extend their lead, 14-8. Madeline Hopson would set up kills for Cervantes and Cristen Cleveland to cut the lead to three, 16-13. With Crowley leading, 21-14, Scots would go on 4-0 run with a block by Keeley Beary and Mollie McCoy, kill by Reyleigh Twist, ace by Cervantes, and an error by the Pioneers contributing to make keep the lead at three 21-18. Pioneer's would respond with their defense taking the first set. 

The second was incredibly close run only being decided by three points. Scots took early, 3-0, with Hopson laying down two big service aces. An Pioneer's attack error and kill by Cleveland assisted by Hopson would keep Scots in the lead, 7-3. Crowley's Ridge would close the lead to tie it, 7-7, the first of three ties this set. Scots regained and maintained there with two kills from Cervantes set up by Snow, 11-10. Beary would find the hardwood and Hopson would run the offense for McCoy to drive in two more kills to put Scots on top, 16-12. With the Scots still leading late in this set Beary would send another kill over the net with Snow on the assist, 21-18, Pioneers would respond with a 7-1 run to the lead and the set. 

Scots found themselves down early in the third set, 10-5. A run from the Scot 4-0 with kills from McCoy, Cervantes, Beary, and an ace by Hopson would close the lead to four, 13-9. Pioneers would extend their lead and Scots would try to keep up with Neveah Ghan notching a kill, 18-12. With the score 22-13, Crowley's Ridge would make a service error to set up a 12-2 Scots run. Olivia Locke drove in a service, while Beary and Claire Crothers threw up a block, 22-16.  Scots would keep up the attack with Hopson sending her fourth ace to the floor, Beary recording a kill, and Beary and Cervantes on a block, 22-23. Cervantes would deliver the Scots the lead with two kills, 25-24. Scots would take the set off an attack error. 

Fourth set started in similar fashion and had a similar result. Pioneers led, 7-4, Hopson would keep things moving for Beary and Ghan to deliver kills, 7-6. Cervantes would set up this time for Beary to make it 13-11. A Lyon 4-1 run was filled with Pioneer errors and a kill by Beary, 17-16. McCoy would tie the set, 19-19, off an assist from Locke. A kill from Cervantes and block by Beary would tie it again 24-24. Hopson would set up kills for Beary to tie it at 25 and for Cervantes to at 26. Carothers would lay a block to notch the 29th point of the set for the Scots to take it. 

With the match tied 2-2 each team knew it keep it together in order to win the match. Hopson would run the offense setting up Beary, Cervantes, and Cleveland for kills to take an early lead, 4-2. Pioneers would respond with 5-0 run, 7-4. Errors by Crowley's Ridge and a kill by Cleveland would make 8-7. Pioneers would extend their lead to 12-8, but Cervantes would set up Beary for a kill to make it 12-9. With Crowley leading 14-9, two back-to-back errors and two aces by Carothers would bring the Scots within two points of victory, 14-13. However drove in the kill to the take the match 3-2. 

Cervantes and Cleveland recorded a double-double. This is Cleveland's sixth of the year, recording 13 kills and 19 digs leading the team. She also led the team in digs with 19. This is Cervantes' first double-double in her career, recording 14 kills as the tied leader and 10 digs. Beary was tied for kills leader with 14 and is the leader in blocks with four total (1 solo, 3 assisted). Both Cervantes and Beary lead the team in point value each with 16.5. Hopson ran the offense with 32 assists on the day and led the team in service aces with four total. 

Scots will travel to Fulton, Missouri to compete against host the Mississippi University for Women and Westminster College on October 11th starting at 12:00 PM.
