Scots fall on Homecoming night in tough loss to Centenary in overtime

Batesville, AR - After an hour and half weather delay, Scots took to the field in a downpour to finish the fourth quarter. Tied, Lyon was in position to take the game but mistakes forced it to overtime where a bad hold on the field goal attempt handed the the Centenary College Gents the game, 23-20. Lyon is now 1-4 on season and 0-2 in SCAC conference play.

Offensively Lyon had 426 yards with 113 coming through the air and 313 on the ground. Grayson Johnson was 15-of-27 for 113 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and one interception. Jacobi Williams led the team in rushing putting up 92 yards on 23 attempts. Javarion Williams was Scots top receiver going for 59 yards on eight catches and a touchdown. Defensively William Litton and Trampas Stubbs were your lead tacklers today with each recording nine. Litton had four solo and 5 assisted, while Stubbs notched five solo and four assisted. Oscar Anderson led the team in tackles for loss with 2.5 for 12 yards. Jackson Crawford Jr. broke up two passes in the field leading your Scots.

Scots won the toss deferring and after kickoff Gents scored within three plays off a big rush, but failed to the find the goal on PAT. Down 6-0 Scots would respond with a 11-play 65-yard drive of their own after Javarion Williams returned the kickoff to the Lyon 35-yard line. Jacobi Williams would cross half-field on consistent rushes and a lateral from Jacobi to Javarion Williams would get us to the Gents 38-yard line. Johnson would find Javarion Williams in the end zone for touchdown and Jesus Romero-Castillo would get it between the posts for the extra point to make it 7-6. Rene Dominique would force a fumble on a caught pass that was recovered by Austin Swaim that was returned for 32-yards. Ball now on the Centenary's 40-yard line Scots would go three and out, an opportunity the Gents would use to go up 12-7. The Gents would score again with little time in the first quarter remaining on the first play of the drive to go up 18-7. Both sides were unable to score in the second quarter, but Lyon's Defense was able to make an impact. Crawford Jr. and Anderson kept receiver from the cross the 50-yard line, Keidrick Wooten and Swaim stopped Gents rushing attack, and William Littell blocked a punt to put to give Scots favorable field position. Centenary would keep the lead going into halftime 18-7.

Lyon would receive in the second half and go on a 12-play 67-yard drive after Louis Calhoun returned the kickoff to Lyon's own 30-yard line. Rushes from Tky Posey and Johnson would be crucial to move the ball, with Johnson hitting Peyton Richardson for a 20-yard reception to put the ball on the Centenary 15-yard line. Posey would rush left to find the endzone, but a blocked extra point returned by the Gents would make it 20-13. Defense would stand up with Litton stopping the rush at the line of scrimmage, Swaim and Anderson bringing down the Gents running back, and Crawford Jr. breaking up a pass to force a punt. Scots next drive would see them go 88-yards in seven a half minutes stretching into the fourth quarter, but would come up short as a sack in the redzone would force turnover on downs. Defense again would limit the Gents ground Litton, Stubbs and Xiyiah Spencer-Cole making tackles. Rain, thunder, and lightning would force teams off field for around an hour and a half, but teams would return to continue this drive still in pouring rain. Gents would fumble with the ball slipping out of their hands to be recovered by Crawford Jr. on our own 49-yard line. Lyon would be unsuccessful on their next drive, but the defense prevented Centenary from passing their own 25-yard line forcing a punt that was downed at the Lyon 39-yard line. On Scots next drive Posey would put up 33-yards on carries to cross the fifty and get the Scots to the Gents 42-yard line. Johnson would take the ball to the endzone on a 24-yard rush and a good extra point from Romero-Castillo would tie it 20-20. Scots defense would force a three and out giving Scots the ball back on their side of the half field line. Scots final drive of the 4th ended in attempted field goal that would have won the game but a combination of bad snap and hold led to Romero-Castillo attempting to run it in but was brought down. With that we would go to overtime.

In overtime Centenary got the ball first on Lyon's 25-yard line, they would go 18-yards in eight plays with the Lyon defense holding them to a field goal 23-20. Now with the ball in the Scots hands 23-yards off rushes from Jacobi Williams would put us on the Gents 2-yard line. Williams would be stopped at the one twice, Johnson would then recover his own fumble to put us back at the Centenary 11-yard line. Another combo bad snap and hold would make Romero-Castillo rush but would be brought down seven yards short of a touchdown.

Lyon will travel to Conway, Arkansas next week to face the Hendrix College Warriors on Saturday, October 25th at 6:00 PM.
