Columbus, MS - Lyon College volleyball had a mixed day competing in the Mississippi University for Women's (MUW) tri-meet. Scots fell in three sets to the Westminster College Blue Jays (22-25, 21-25, 24-26), but then won a nail biter over the MUW Owls in five sets (25-19, 18-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-13). With today's results Scots are now 9-11 on the season and 5-4 in SLIAC conference play.

Lyon 0, Westminster 3
Scots started the first in front off four straight points off kills coming from
Cristen Cleveland,
Mollie McCoy, and
Keeley Beary along with an error by the the Blue Jays, 6-1.
Madeline Hopson would set up Cleveland as she drove in two kills to make it 9-3. Westminster would come alive and respond with 7-0 run, with errors by Lyon, kills, and blocks making the difference, 10-10. Scots and Blue Jays would tie four times as they traded points back and forth with
Isabel Cervantes setting up
Avery Fuller for two kills and errors from Westminster adding the points. Now tied 15-15, Westminster's offense would send them on a 6-1 run to take the lead 19-16. Fuller would send a kill to the floor to make bring the Scots within four, 21-17. Lyon would score point in a row with
Claire Carothers driving in a kill, a Cervantes ace, a block by Fuller and McCoy to bring it withing two, 23-21. A kill from Carothers would get Lyon close, 24-22, but the Blue Jays would drive in the final kill to take the set 25-22.
Second set began with points being traded between teams, that is until Cleveland with Cervantes on the assist drove in a kill and followed it with ace to put Lyon in front, 6-4. Cervantes would drive in another service ace for a 8-5 advantage. Westminster would close within two but two errors would extend Scots lead back to four, 11-7. Hopson would set up McCoy to drive in a kill to keep the Scots lead, 12-10. Blue Jays would tie it, but two kills from Cleveland and an error would keep Scots on top, 15-12. Both teams would then trade points but Westminster would take a two point lead off a 5-0 run, 19-17. A block from McCoy and Fuller would bring the Scots within one, 19-18, but Blue Jays offense made it a five point game (23-18). A block from Cleveland and Beary along with an error would bring it within in three, 24-21. But the Blue Jays would send a kill to the floor to take the set 25-21.
In the third Scots took the lead off a 5-1 run, with an ace from Hopson, two kills from McCoy, a kill by Beary, and an error. Westminster would respond with 4-0 run to tie 5-5. McCoy would deliver Scots momentary advantage with kill but Blue Jays would take the lead off kill and block 7-6. Cleveland with an assist from Hopson would send one to the floor to tie, 7-7. Another kill from Cervantes and two errors by the Blue Jays would make it 10-9. Teams would trade points but a kill from Beary and an attack error would keep the Scots in front, 16-13. Blue Jays would come within two points, but Hopson would drive in a kill and an error would make it 18-15. Westminster would then tie it with a three point run briefly, but Cleveland would drive in a kill, 19-18. Teams would then trade points with Scots taking the lead off an error, 23-22. Westminster would go on a 4-1 run with an error handing the Blue Jays the final point to take the set 26-24.
Cleveland led the team in kills with 11 and points with 12.5. She contributed one ace, one block, and six digs. Cervantes led in service aces recording three. She contributed one kill and one dig. Hopson facilitated the offense recording 15 assists and contributed one kill, two aces, and one dig. Defensivley, McCoy and Fuller led the team in blocks each having three. McCoy contributed six kills and one dig. Fuller recorded five kills. Carothers led the team in digs tallying nine. She added three kills and one assist.
Lyon 3 , MUW 2
Set one would begin with the Owls scoring two, but an error and an ace by
Claire Carothers would tie 2-2. Teams would trade points, but a service ace from
Kassi Patton and kill by
Isabel Cervantes would put the Scots in front, 6-4. Later, a 4-0 run from the Scots starting with a service error, kills by
Mollie McCoy and Carothers, and attack error would make it 12-8. MUW would respond with a 3-0 run to bring it withing one, 12-11. Both teams would trade points back-and-forth again but a kill from McCoy assisted by
Madeline Hopson and an error would begin a 5-1 run, with a kill from
Avery Fuller, ace from Patton, and an error making it 19-14. A block by Cervantes and Fuller would hold the Owls at seven, 22-15. Cervantes assisted by
Cristen Cleveland would drive it to the floor, 23-17. Hopson would set up McCoy to make the final kill and take the set 25-19.
Scots would start the first set up 5-1 off errors, kills by Cleveland and McCoy, and a block by Cleveland and
Keeley Beary. MUW would respond with a 6-1 run to take the lead, 7-6. A kill from Cleveland and an error would put Lyon up for a moment, but 7-0 MUW run would follow, 14-8. A kill by Carothers set up by Cervantes would cut the lead to four, 14-10. Owls offense would show out going on a 7-0 run to go up, 22-11. Scots would battle back with a 6-0 run with kills from Fuller, McCoy, Beary, an ace by Hopson and errors, 22-17. A Lyon attack error would give the Owls the final point to take the match 25-18.
The third set would began with Scots in front with two kills from McCoy and two aces by Carothers making the difference, 6-2. The Owls would close the lead to three, but an error would start a 3-0 run with a kill from Cleveland and an attack error making it 9-3. Cervantes would set up Fuller for a kill, 12-9. Teams would exchange points and the Owls would tie it, 14-14. Cleveland would put the Scots on top with another kill, 16-14. MUW would respond with a 7-1 run to take a three point lead, 21-18. A kill by Fuller followed by a ace by Hopson would bring the game to one point, 23-22. Hopson would set up crucial kills from Carothers and Cleveland to tie it, 24-24. MUW would take the third set off an attack error.
Set four started hot with Owls going up 4-0 to start, Scots responded with a 6-0 run. Hopson ran the offense setting up kills for Beary, McCoy, and Cleveland as an ace from Carothers and errors made the difference. Lyon would go up five after Cleveland drove in a kill, 11-6. MUW would close the lead to four, but a Scots 4-0 run off errors and kills by Cleveland and Carothers, 15-7. The Owls would then make it 16-11 off errors. A big block from Beary would extend Scots lead to eight, 20-12. Cleveland would drive in two kills to make it 23-15. Cervantes would drive in a kill from Patton and Cervantes would send an ace to take the set.
In the fifth and final set, McCoy would strike first followed by a error and a kill by Hopson, 3-1. Beary assisted by Hopson would drive in a kill, 5-3. Cleveland would add another kill to make it 6-4. MUW would go on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 9-7. A kill from Carothers set up by
Sofia Santis and an error would tie it, 9-9.The Owls would go up three, 13-10, but Scots would respond with five point run. Hopson would set up three kills from Cleveland, Beary, McCoy with McCoy herself driving in the final kill to take the match.
Cleveland notched a double-double with 15 kills and 17 digs. She led the team with 16.5 points, two assists, one ace, and one block. Carothers lead the team in service aces with four. She contributed six kills, one assists, and 14 digs. Beary led the team with two blocks, but she added eight kills and one dig. Hopson ran the offense with 32 assists. She added one kill, two aces, and six digs.
Scots will travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face the Webster University Gorlocks on Friday, October 17 at 4:00 PM.
