CARLINVILLE, Illinois - The Lyon College Scots swept a non-conference double-header from the Blackburn College Beavers in Carlinville, Illinois this afternoon 9-3 and 11-2 to improve to 17-16 overall on the season.
In Game 1,
Walker Smith led off with a base hit to left center and Braden Hendirx was hit by a pitch. Lane Vangennip came in to pinch run for Hendrix and
Jayden Cull drew a walk that loaded the bases.
Logan Doody followed that with a shot to left center to bring in Smith.
Caleb Collins beat out an infield hit and Vangennip scored on the play for a 2-0 lead.Â
Cull scored on a passed ball and Graef hit a sacrifice fly to advance Collins to third base, then
Ashton Compton reached first on an error and Collins scored an unearned run to make it 4-0 Lyon College.
Blackburn scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Scots came back with a run in the top of the fifth. Doody led off with a walk, then Collins sacrificed him to second. Graef laid down SAC bunt to move Doody to third and Compton reached on an error that allowed Doody to score for a 5-2 lead.Â
In the top of the sixth, Smith reached on an error with one out. Vangennip singled to left field and Cull walked to load the bases. Doody drew a walk that brought in Smith, then Collins singled to short left and Vangennip scored to make it a 7-2 game.
The Scots tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh. Compton was hit by a pitch to start the inning,
Kooper McCoy walked and
Logan Lightner was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Compton scored on a wild pitch and the two other runners moved up. Smith walked and with one out, Cull was hit by a pitch and McCoy scored. for a 9-2 lead.Â
Tyler Davis started the game for the Scots and went 1.2 innings and picked up the win.
Rhett Crafton came in for 5.1 innings of work and recorded four strikeouts and allowed one run.Â
The Scots trailed 2-0 until the top of the fourth inning. Collins led off with a single and Graef hit a shot to left field. Compton reached on a fielder's choice and Collins advanced to third. McCoy singled to first base and advanced to second on an error by the Blackburn first baseman that scored Collins and Compton to tie the game 2-2.Â
Lyon College took a four-run lead in the top of the fifth. Vangennip led off with a single to right center field, Cull got a base hit to left field, then Doody doubled to left field to score Vangennip and Cull. Collins singled to left field and then stole second and Compton singled to center field to bring in Collins and Doody with one out for a 6-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Vangennip singled again to left field and Cull walked. Collins singled to right center and scored Vangennip. Graef singled to left field to bring in Cull and Collins scored when Compton singled to right field. Lightner doubled to right center and Graef scored for a 10-2 Lyon College lead.
The Scots added their final run in the top of the seventh inning when Collins singled to center field to bring in
Kyle Carver, who was pinch running for Doody.Â
Ian Jackson picked up the win from the mound for the Scots. Jackson threw 2.1 innings and
Ethan Hopkins pitched 4.2 innings in relief.Â
The Scots are 11-3 in the SLIAC and will be at Hendrix College on Tuesday, play a double-header on Wednesday at the University of the Ozarks and return to Fred Wann Field to play Principia College on Saturday in a conference double-header.
