MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Freshman pitcher
Chloe McCance hit three 2-run homers to lead the Lyon College Scots softball team to a sweep over the Rhodes College Lynx on Wednesday afternoon in Memphis.
The Scots (5-3) trailed 4-0 heading in to the top of the seventh inning when
Trinity Arrambide led off with a single, then McCance belted a 2-run homer over the left-center field fence.Â
Jada King singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, then went to third on a wild pitch. MK Duffield singled in King and
Fallon Lancaster singled to move Duffield to second. With one out and the Scots trailing 4-3,
Sophie Varela reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Brianna Morquecho, who came in to pinch run for Duffield to tie the game. Varela stole second and with two outs,
Whitney Mitchell reached on a third strike passed ball and Lancaster scored. Arrambide reached on an error by the left fielder that scored Varela and Mitchell to put Lyon College ahead 7-4.Â
McCance pitched 3.1 innings and gave up four runs.
Sydney Lasher came in to get the win and pitched 3.2 innings with out allowing a score.
Lyon had seven hits in the game.
Anna Voth, McCance, King, Duffield, Lancaster and
Emily Martinez all got hits.Â
In the second game, Varela led off the top of the first inning with a double, then stole third base. Voth singled and scored Valera, then Voth moved to second on a sacrifice ground out to the pitcher and went to third on a passed ball. Arrambide singled in Voth and McCance her second 2-run homer. Duffield had a single and the Scots had a 4-0 lead by the end of the inning.
The Scots added two more runs in the top of the third inning to go up 6-0. Arrambide was hit by a pitch to lead off and that set up McCance's third 2-run homer. Duffield and King singled behind her, but they were left stranded on base.
Rhodes came back to add two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the pitching of
McKenzie Campbell kept the Lynx off balance. McKenzie picked up the win by going 7.0 innings and allowed only two runs.Â
The Scots had 11 hits in the game led by a 3-for-3 performance from Arrambide. McCance, Duffield and King all had two hits each, while Varela and Voth both had one hit apiece.
