Lyon College advances to semifinals at USCAA Men's National Championship

Toney scores 20 to lead four Scots in double-figures in 86-57 win over Bryant & Stratton Syracuse

PETERSBURG, Virginia -  Frank Toney scored 20 points, Nikola SaSaroga and Trent Bell added 12 points each and Kylon McCullough added 11 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Bryant & Stratton Syracuse Bobcats 86-57 in the quarterfinals of the USCAA National Men's Division I Basketball Championships at Richard Bland College in Petersburg on Sunday night. 

The Scots (17-8) outscored the Bobcats (22-10) 51-23 in the first half and cruised in the second half to a 29-point victory. Jarron Harriott came off the Lyon College bench for nine points, John Paul Morgan added seven points and nine rebounds, Luke Bridges added four points and seven rebounds, Jones White and Jackson Midyett each had three points, Isaiah Sweetwine and Ahmadou Diallo scored two points and Gavin Brunson added a free throw to round out the Scots' scoring. 
Lyon College out-rebounded the B&S Syracuse 54 to 38. Both Toney and SaSaroga had seven rebounds each and McCullough had five boards. 

Lyon College shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half and made 54.5 percent of their three-point shots, which translates to 6-of-11. The Scots had 38 points from the paint, scored 21 points off of turnovers, had 10 second chance points, score four of the fast-break and got 31 huge points from its bench. The game was tied one time and there were two lead changes early in the first half. Lyon's largest lead was 33 points that came with 3:31 left in the game.

The Bobcats jumped out an early 1-0 lead, but Bell knocked down a three-pointer to get the Scots on the scoreboard. After the Bobcats tied the game, Toney made a three-pointer, but Bryant and Stratton Syracuse came back to take a 7-6 lead. Toney was fouled on a three-point shot and made all three free throws to put Lyon College back in front. Then the Scots went on a 21-2 run to lead 27-9. 
During the run, McCullough made two free throws, Harriott made a free throw, McCullough put in a layup, Toney put in a layup and made two free throws. SaSaroga scored inside, Toney made a three-pointer and hit two more free throws and Morgan scored on a reverse layup inside.
After the Bobcats got a basket, SaSaroga scored again inside on two straight trips, then he made two free throws for a 33-13 Lyon College lead with 6:48 to go in the first half. White made two free throws and Bell canned a three-pointer. Morgan made a free throw and McCullough hit a three-pointer for a 44-19 Lyon College lead. Harriott made a three-pointer, Toney put in a layup off the fast-break and Bell drove the baseline for a dunk with 38 seconds to go in the half to put the Scots up by 28 points, 51-23.

SaSaroga made two field goals and Morgan put in a basket in the early stages of the second half. Morgan scored again and Harriott put in another three-pointer for a 64-38 lead. McCullough drove in for a layup and Harriott added to free throws to make it a 30-point lead for Lyon College with 10:53 to play. Toney made a three-pointer and Bell put in a layup at the 7:04 mark to make it 73-45. From there, Coach Rodney Mayes cleared his bench.
Bridges scored inside, White added a free throw, Sweetwine scored in the paint, Midyett hit a patented three-pointer, Brunson hit a free throw, Bridges scored again and a layup from Diallo finished out the scoring in the game. 

The Scots will now face Bryant & Stratton Buffalo in the semifinals at 9 a.m. (CST) on Tuesday morning at Virginia State University. Buffalo defeated Manor College 87-66 in an earlier quarterfinal game.
