ST. LOUIS, Missouri - In their first season of SLIAC competition, the Lyon College Scots men's basketball team earned a share of the conference regular-season championship by defeating the Webster Gorlocks 65-53 in St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots (16-8, 13-5) had four players in double-figures led by Irael Palmer with 15 points.
Nikola SaSaroga had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Kylon McCullough had 14 points,
Frank Toney hit for 13 points,
John Paul Morgan had four points and eight rebounds, Trent Bell had a three-pointer and
Malik Madison had two points and three blocked shots in the win.
Lyon College ties Fontbonne University and Greenville University with identical conference records of 13-5.Â
The Gorlocks jumped out to an early lead, but Palmer scored on a jumper and McCullough made a three-pointer. SaSaroga put in a layup and a free throw to put the Scots up 8-3. Morgan scored inside, SaSaroga put in a layup and sank two free throws before Palmer put in a layup off the fast-break to post a 16-8 advantage with 9:56 to go in the first half.
SaSaroga made one of two free throws, Palmer put in another fast-break layup, SaSaroga made two more free throws and Morgan made a layup for a 23-8 Lyon College lead with 5:52 left in the first half.
Toney made a three-pointer and made a jump shot, then McCullough scored on a mid-range jumper on consecutive trips down court to give the Scots a 32-21 lead at halftime.
Webster came back to cut the lead to six points early in the second half, but Palmer made a three-pointer, SaSaroga made a layup on two trips down court to make it an 11-point advantage for Lyon, 39-28. Webster scored four in a row before Toney buried two straight three-pointers to lift the Scots to a 45-32 lead with 14:27 to play.
The Gorlocks got back to within nine points, but Bell made a three-pointer and Palmer was hit a jump shot. Webster got the lead down to five points, 50-45, but a basket by Madison, a layup from Palmer and two three-pointers from McCullough made it a 60-48 game with 4:47 left.
Palmer put in a layup, McCullough made a free throw, then Toney added two free throws with 10 seconds left to make it 65-51.
