West scores 23 points to lead Scots past Hendrix 86-73

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - Newcomer, junior forward Colbie West of Bradley, proved his worth on Thursday night by scoring a team-high 23 points and hauling down 14 rebounds to lead the Lyon College Scots to a hard-fought 86-73 victory over the visiting Hendrix Warriors at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (2-0) also got 18 points from Cave City's Trenton Bell, who hit 6-of-13 three-pointers on the night. Sacramento, California native senior Malik Madison scored 15 points and added three more blocked shots to his season total. Kylon McCullough of North Little Rock put in 14 points, while Long Island, New York's Frank Toney put in nine points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals in the win by Lyon College.

The Scots ran out to a 19-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, 27-8, thanks to West, McCullough, Madison, Toney and Bell. McCullough's three-pointer at the three minute mark kept the Lyon College lead at 19 points, 41-22.

Lyon led 41-27 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Hendrix cut the Scots lead to nine points, 41-32, but three dunks from Madison, a basket from West, then three-pointers from Bell and McCullough raised the lead to 26, 60-34 with 15:05 left in the game.
West continued to score inside and Kennedy Warren put in a basket, then Luke Bridges came in and got two free throws for a 69-47 lead with 9:32 to go.
Hendrix picked at the lead until it was 69-60 and made it nine points again with 5:10 to go, 72-63, despite Toney popping a three-pointer from the wing. Bell hit a three-pointer, West scored two more baskets and Madison put in two free throws to make a 16-point Scots lead with 3:08 left.
West hit another shot inside, Madison added another free throw and Bell kept the Lyon College lead in double-digits with his sixth three-pointer with 36 seconds to go to make it 86-73.

The Scots scored 38 points in the paint, had 19 points off of turnovers, 18 second-chance points, 32 points on fast-breaks and got seven points from its bench.
Lyon College was 33-of-71 from the field, made 11-of-32 three-pointers, hit 9-of-13 free throws, had 45 rebounds, 21 assists and nine steals as a team.

The Scots return to action at Becknell on Saturday afternoon against the Austin College Kangaroos.
