BATESVILLE, Arkansas - Sophomore
Natalya Kaza scored 29 points to lead the Lyon College Scots past the Prinicipia Panthers 87-69 on Saturday afternoon in Becknell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in SLIAC action.
The Scots (12-7, 7-5) also got 16 points apiece from
Allison Byars and
Brooklyn Rowe.
Savanna Lopez had 10 points,
Zharia Childress scored nine points,
Samantha Taylor added four points and 10 steals to go with seven assists and
Stella Parker had a three-point play.Â
Principia led 6-2 before Byars scored, Childress made one of two free throws, then got a steal and put in a basket to put the Scots up 7-6. Kaza made a jumper, then stepped out to make her first three-pointer. Kaza came back on the next Lyon possession to make her second trey and put the Scots ahead 15-6 with 5:07 to go in the first quarter. After two baskets by the Panthers, Rowe made a three-pointer for Lyon College and Kaza put in layup off a fast-break. Byars scored on a fast-break layup off a steal from Kaza to make it a 12 point lead for the Scots. A free throw from Principia with 1:01 to go make it 11 points and neither team scored any more.
The Panthers came back to cut the Scots lead to five points, but Taylor made a shot on a drive through the paint, Childress added a jumper and Lopez scored to make it a 28-21 lead with 5:14 to go before halftime. The Panthers drew to within three points when Byars scored, but Principia made it one point on two free throws with 47 seconds left, 30-29. Parker drove the lane and put in a basket while being fouled, then completed the three-point play to give the scores a 33-31 halftime lead.
The Scots outscored Principia 27-18 in the third quarter to open up a double-digit lead. Kaza started off with two free throws, then added a jump shot after a Byars steal and Lopez put in two baskets in a row. Taylor scored after making a steal, Byars put in two free throws and hit a jump shot for a 47-38 Lyon College lead. Kaza put in a layup off a fast-break, made two free throws, Byars made two free throws and Kaza hit another three-pointer for a 55-41 lead with 3:21 to go in the third period. Childress made a jumper, Rowe hit a driving shot inside and added a free throw later for a 60-49 Scots lead headed into the fourth quarter.
Childress started off the final 10 minutes with two free throws, Lopez made a jump shot, Rowe put in a layup and Byars scored to make it 68-55 in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the period. Byars put in another jumper, Kaza hit again from beyond the three-point stripe and added a mid-range jumper. Kaza put back in an offensive rebound, then Rowe made a layup and hit a three-pointer for a 82-68 lead with 1:10 to go. Rowe made another three-pointer and Kaza put in a layup with 38 seconds to go for an 18-point Lyon College advantage.Â
