BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Israel Palmer and
Kylon McCullough both made one of two free throws in the final 11 seconds of overtime to lift the Lyon College Scots past the Webster University Gorlocks 76-74 on Saturday afternoon in SLIAC action at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (10-5, 7-2) trailed 40-26 at halftime to Webster and battled back to tie the game at 68-68 by the end of regulation. Lyon outscored Webster 8-6 in the overtime period to pick up the win and stayed tied for the lead in the SLIAC standings.
Nikola SaSaroga led the Scots with 16 points and six rebounds. Palmer added 14 points, McCullough had 13 points and 10 rebounds,
Malik Madison had 11 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.
Frank Toney scored six points,
John Paul Morgan had eight points,
Jones White scored five and
Trenton Bell added three points in the win.Â
Scores by SaSaroga, Madison and McCullough put the Scots up early on. Palmer added a three-pointer, but Webster came back to take an 11-9 lead before SaSaroga tied the game on a jump shot in the paint. SaSaroga scored again, but Webster rolled out to a 24-13 lead with 8:42 to go in the first half.
White made a three-pointer for the Scots, then Toney made a steal and converted a layup, but Webster led 33-18. Bell made a free throw, White made a short jumper, McCullough and SaSaroga scored on fast-breaks and Madison added a free throw, but the Scots trailed by 14 at the break.
Webster had built a 16-point lead before scores from Toney and Palmer. A dunk by Madison led to consecutive jumpers from SaSaroga to cut the lead down to six points with 14:38 to go, 42-36. McCullough scored on a mid-range jumper, Morgan scored inside twice, Toney hit a jumper and Morgan put in a layup. Palmer scored on a fast-break and Madison got another dunk to cut the Webster lead to four points, 53-49 with 9:09 to go.
Webster led 60-49 when Bell made a jump shot, Morgan completed a three-point play, Mcullough made a three-pointer, SaSaroga put in a layup and Madison had a jumper go in. Madison added two free throws seconds later, McCullough made another three-pointer and Palmer scored on a short jump shot to tie the game at 68-68 with 15 seconds remaining.
SaSaroga scored inside and Palmer made a jump shot for a four-point Scots lead in overtime. Palmer made two free throws after Webster had tied the game, then added another with 11 seconds left to make it a three-point Lyon College lead. Webster made a jumper to cut it to one point, but McCullough was fouled and made one of two from the line. The Gorlocks missed a long three-pointer at the buzzer.
