GREENVILLE, Illinois -
Savanna Lopez scored 21 points, but fouled out near the end of the fourth quarter and host Greenville outscored Lyon College 12-8 in the final three minutes to win 96-92 in Greenville on Thursday night in SLIAC action.
The Scots (9-4, 4-2) had four other players score in double-figures with
Samantha Taylor having 17 points,
Natalya Kaza had 12 points, Booklyn Rowe scored 16 and
Stella Parker added 10.
Allison Byars had eight points and nine assists for Lyon College in the loss.Â
Lyon led 22-18 after the first quarter and 52-44 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Scots held a 72-63 lead, but were outscored 33-20 in the fourth quarter by Greenville.
A three-pointer from Taylor, who had five more steals in the game, and a free throw led to a basket inside by Lopez for a 6-0 lead. Kaza made a three-pointer and later, Rowe made a three-pointer to keep the Scots in front by five points. Greenville came back to lead by two points, until Byars tied the game on a layup at 14-14.Â
The Panthers led by four points, then Taylor made a three-pointer and Kaza got the lead back for Lyon College with a short jump shot. Kaza made a three-pointer with 27 seconds left to put Lyon up 22-18.
Lopez and Taylor scored early in the second quarter for the Scots and Byars made a three-pointer for a 29-24 lead for the Scots. Free throws from Byars kept the lead at six points. Byars made one of two from the line and Kaza hit a three-pointer before Parker hit a pair of free throws that set up a three-pointer from Taylor to make it 41-32. A three-pointer from Rowe made for a 10-point Scots lead at the 4:49 mark of the period and Rowe made another three-pointer to give Lyon College its largest margin at 11 points, 47-36. Taylor made a free throw and
Alexis Soloman scored twice before the end of the half for the Scots.
Greenville got within two points in the third quarter before Taylor made two free throws. Kaza hit a jump shot and Lopez scored. Lopez added another basket for a 60-55 lead with 6:20 to go in the quarter, then Parker and Rowe scored baskets to keep the lead at seven points. Taylor scored on a drive and Lopez put in the final three baskets of the period to put the Scots up 72-63, but in the process picked up her fourth foul.
Early in the fourth quarter, Rowe it a jump shot to make it a 74-64 Lyon College lead, but Greenville came back despite a basket by
Kayla Richardson. Lopez put in a basket at the 6:05 mark to keep Lyon up by seven points, but the Panthers closed the gap to one point before Lopez scored again for the Scots. Parker made a field goal and Taylor put in a free throw and Lopez made one of two from the line, but Greenville tie the game at 84-84 with 3:02 to play.
Greenville led by two when Rowe made a three-pointer to make it 87-86. Parker made a three-pointer seconds later to make it a 90-88 lead with 2:05 to go. Taylor scored the Scots final points with 1:31 to play on a jumper to make it 92-88. Greenville came back with a three-pointer and took the lead on five free throws.
The Scots will be on the road on Saturday at Spalding University beginning at 1 p.m.
