Scots football defeated at Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The first season of Division III football has its growing pains for the Lyon Scots.

After seeing a fairly decent Belhaven University last week in a home loss, the Scots (1-2) found themselves in the clutches of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon in Brownwood, Texas. The outcome was indicative of what a first-year D-III program would have to endure against an established top-ranked football team in the Yellow Jackets. The score set a school record - albeit not a what the Scots wanted - 85-0.

Over the years since Lyon College football was rejuvenated, the worse losses have been to Lindsey Wilson College in 2014 and Ottawa University in 2021 (both scores were 76-10).  

The most positive statistics for the Scots was that Eli Funck had six punts for 229 yard for a 38.2 yard average. Jesus Romero-Castillo had four punts for 160 for a 40-yard average and Tanner Mobley had two punts for 69 yards for a 34.5 yard average.

Reginald Brown II had 11 kickoff returns for 180 yards with a long run of 29 yards.

Defensively, Camden Clear had a 10 total tackles with one for a loss of four yards. Will Litton had four tackles and a combined with Janathyian Donald for a two yard loss. Rylan Turks had four tackles an done for a loss of four yards as did Micahel Wingo. Micha Morrison had seven tackles, La'Kendrin Moore had seven tackles, Austin Swaim had five tackles and Trevor McClanahan had four tackles. 

Howard Payne University scored on a 54-yard pass, a 2-yard run, a 41-yard run, 14 pass, a four-yard, 1-yard and a 62-yard pass in the first quarter. By halftime, the Yellow Jackets the score was well out of hand 68-0. 

The Scots will play at home at Pioneer Stadium next week against Westminster. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
