Box Score 4 MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The final scores will never begin to indicate just how well the Lyon College Scots volleyball team played against some of the top competition around the region.
In a 2-day tournament at Rhodes College in Memphis, the Scots (0-7) lost four matches, but that is only the facts of the outcome. The real story began against host Rhodes College on Friday afternoon.Â
In the first set, three service errors and an attack error kept the game close, then Rhodes committed an attack error with
Lauren White serving and White followed that with a service ace to close the gap to 8-7. A kill byÂ
Kylee Sabella on an assist from
Erin Haigwood tied the set at 8-8.Â
A bad set and an attack error allowed Rhodes to move out by three points, but
Isabella Beasley put down a kill off an assist from White. Sabella got another kill on a set from White and attack error made it a one-point game, 12-11.Â
The match continued back and forth with Sabella getting her third kill of the set with an assist from White again. Rhodes moved out to a 17-12lead, but
Keeley Beary got a kill off a set from
Madeline Hopson. An attack error and a service error from Rhodes closed the set back to three points, 18-15.Â
Rhodes had five consecutive kills beforeÂ
Paeton Tucker got a kill off of a Hopson set, but an attack error by the Scots put Rhodes at set point. However, a service error followed by an attack error made it 24-18. The first set ended on a service error by the Scots.
In the second set, Lyon trailed 5-0 before Sabella got a kill off a Hopson set and Rhodes made an attack error. The Scots scored on a Rhodes mistakes until White served up two aces in a row. A bad set from Rhodes closed the set to 8-7. Tucker served two aces in a row and a block by
Bethany Williams and Beasley made it 12-11.
Beasley got a kill from a set by Haigwood, then Rhodes had a service and attack errors, before
Samantha Ferguson got a kill off a Hopson set to make it 16-15. Sabella got a kill from an assist by Hopson to keep the set at one point, then Ferguson got another kill off a Hopson set.
The set was tied at 18-18 on an attack error, and the Scots took the lead on a Beary kill off a Hopson assist. Rhodes committed to more attack errors and the Scots led 21-18. An attack error by Rhodes and a kill by Williams from an assist by White put the Scots ahead 23-21. Rhodes got a kill and two attack errors from Lyon and another kill from Rhodes won the set for them 25-23.
The third set began with a sanction from the Rhodes coach, then Rhodes had an attack error before Ferguson got a kill from an assist by Hopson. An attack error by Rhodes and a block from Ferguson and Beary led to a kill from Beary off a set by Hopson and Beary got a kill off a Hopson set. Rhodes was guilty of a ball-handling error and Beary had a kill off an assist by Hopson. In fact Beary caught fire for two straight kills and Ferguson got a kill on a set by Hopson for a 10-0 Lyon College lead.Â
Tucker got a kill after two attack errors from Rhodes. Tucker came back with another kill off a set from Hopson and a block error by Rhodes to make it 14-3 Scots. Tucker continued her momentum with a solo kill, then Williams got a kill off a set from White and Sabella followed with a kill off a set from White for an 18-8 lead.Â
A service error, a bad set and another service error by Rhodes set up another kill from Tucker. Williams had a service ace to set up the final point that came on an attack error by Rhodes. Lyon won the set 25-14.
The match moved to a fourth set and Ferguson started off the Scots with a kill off a set from
Marti Flores. A bad set and a service error from Rhodes put Lyon up 3-1. The set was tied 5-5 on another Rhodes attack error. Beasley got a kill off a set from White then a block by Salbella and Ferguson put the Scots up 10-7.
Rhodes tied the set, but a service error, a ball handling error and a kill from Sabella made for a 13-10 lead. Another Sabella kill and a kill from Ferguson off a Hopson set put Lyon up by five points 16-11. Beary got a kill and Tucker made a kill off a White set for a 20-15 advantage.Â
Rhodes came back to take a 24-22 lead, but a block by Sabella and Ferguson and an attack error tied the set at 24-24. The Scots had a bad set and Rhodes served an ace to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.
BETHEL vs. LYON
The Scots started off hot with Sabella getting a kill, Hopson served up an ace and Tucker got a kill for a 3-0 lead. Bethel came back to take a one-point lead, but Sabella got a kill from a Hopson set and later an attack error tied the game 5-5.
After three attack errors by Bethel, and a block from Williams and Beasley set up a kill from Sabella off a White set for a 9-8 Scots lead. A block by Ferguson and Beary, then kills from Ferguson and Tucker put Lyon up 15-12.Another block by Ferguson and Beary, and a Bethel attack error made it 17-12. A kill from Ferguson off a set from Flores and a kill by Tucker off a Hopson set led to a kill from Williams off another Hopson set made it 20-14.
Blocks from Williams and Beary and a block from Tucker and Williams and another block by Williams and Beary put the Scot sup 23-15. Beary got another kill to set up the final point of the set, but Bethel came back to take a 25-24 lead. An attack error and a service ace from Tucker led to a set-winningkill from Williams. The Scots prevailed 27-25.
In the second set, a kill by Tucker off an assist from Sabella tied the game early on. Bethel led by two when Tucker got another kill off an assist from Hopson. Williams got a kill off a set from White and Sabella made a kill off a set from White to keep the Scots within two points, 7-5.Â
Sabella got another kill, but Bethel moved out to a six point lead. before they made a service error, an attack error and another service error followed by an attack error closed the gap to 14-10.
Beary got a kill and a block from Beasley and Williams made it 19-12. Sabella's kill off a set from White kept the set at a seven-point difference.Sabella got a kill and Hopson made a kill off a set from Sabella to cut the set to six points, 22-16, but Bethel went on to win 25-17.
In the third set, Hopson started off with a service ace, Beary added a kill off a Flores set and Ferguson got a kill for a 3-1 lead. Another Ferguson kill and a service error kept the Scots in front by one, 5-4. Sabella got a kill off a White set, then she got another kill from a Tucker set. Ferguson followed with two kills in a row and Hopson once again served up an ace for a 10-9 Lyon lead.
Bethel led 14-10 when Beary and Sabella got back-to-back kills, both from sets by Hopson. Again, Bethel moved out to a large lead, 20-12 Beary made a kill, Flores served an ace and Williams made a kill to cut the lead to four points. Sabella had two kills and Beasley got one in a Scots rally that made it a two-point game, 21-19.Â
Sabella and tucke rboth got kills and Williams served an ace and Ferguson's kill made it a 24-23 contest, but an attack error handed Bethel the win, 25-23.
In the fourth set, Bethel led 5-2 before Ferguson got a kill and Flores served an ace. A block by Williams and Beary, then a kill by Clarie Carothers from Flores cut the lead to three points, 8-5. Kills from Sabella and Carothers tied the set at 9-9, then a kill from Tucker and a service ace from Williams put the Scots up by one, 12-11.Â
Later kills from Ferguson and Beary kept the Scots up by one. Tucker got a kill and Beary made a kill to put Lyon up 20-15. Beary's kill and a kill from Sabella put the Scots on the verge of winning the set, 24-21. Bethel rallied back to take a 25-24 lead before Williams had a kill to tie the game. The Scots gave up a kill and a service ace to allow Bethel to win the final set 27-25.
MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR
The guts and glory of the Scots showed even more when they took on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday.Â
A kill from from Beary of a set by Hopson and another kill from Beary off a set from
Olivia Locke tied the game. Locke served up an ace to put Lyon College in front by one point 4-3. Williams got a kill, then Sabella got two kills in a row off a sets from White to make it 8-7.
Another kill from Sabella tied the set 9-9, but MHB ran out to a 13-9 lead before Beary made a kill. A kill from Tucker and four attack errors by MHB allowed the Scots to close the gap to 17-15. Tucker got another kill, then Sabella made a kill to cut the lead to 23-18.
Sabella added another kill but Mary Hardin-Baylor got the final kill to win 25-19.
The Scots won the second set 25-20. Sabella started the show with two straight kills to tie the set at 4-4. Beasley got a kill, and White set up Sabella for another kill. Sabella an Tucker bot got kills to go up 8-5. Williams got a kill and Beasley sparked the Scots with three straight kills to put Lyon up 12-6.
Ferguson got into the act with a kill off a White set, then Sabella had a kill off a Hopson set and Locke served an ace for a 16-10 lead. Sabella got two straight kills and Tucker added another to push the Scots lead to 20-12.Â
MHB came back to close the gap to three points, 21-18 when Ferguson, Tucker and Beary had kills. Locke ended teh set with an ace serve for the Scots.
In the third set, the Scots trailed 5-0 when Ferguson made a kill. Locke served an ace, while Sabella and Williams had kills to cut the MHB lead to three points. Beasley had a kill and Sabella made another off a White set to make it a one-point game 10-9.Â
Beasley got another kill later off a set from White, but MHB went up 19-10 before Beasley had another kill off a set from Locke. MHB went on to win the third set 25-12.
In the fourth set, two kills by Ferguson off assists from Hopson set up kills from Beasley and Ferguson. Hopson served an ace and Tucker made a kill to make it a 13-10 game. Beary and Sabella followed with kills, both off of sets from Hopson, but it was a 21-13 MHB lead before the Scots got another point.
Williams and Sabella made kills off of sets from White and Sabella served an ace fo cut the MHB lead to 21-17. MBH was on the verge of match point, but made two service erros and Beasley got a kill to make it 24-20.. MHB won 25-20.Â
Stats from the Austin College game were not available as of yet, but the Roos defeated the Scots 3-2.Â
"We played extremely well this weekend," Scots head coach
Kortney Cunningham said. "We played tough teams, but hung with all of them and honestly looked the best we have all season."
The Scots return to Becknell Gymasium on Friday for their first home game of the year. Friday's match is against Freed-Hardeman.
