Box Score BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots football started off with a 9-0 lead on the visiting Belhaven on Saturday afternoon, but the top-25 Division III Blazers scored 28 straight points and went on to take a 48-15 win..
Belhaven took the opening kickoff at its own 35 and moved the ball to the Lyon College 34 before Cam Clear stopped running back Kolbe Blunt for no yards on third-and-5 forcing a punt.
The Scots started on their own 20 yard line with
Brady Miller at quarterback (Miller finished the game with 240 yards passing). A handoff to
Jaylin Babers netted 13 yards on the first play, then Miller ran for four more yards. On a third-and-5, Lyon got a 57-yard completion to Reggie Brown down to the Blazer 5. Two incomplete passes later,
Jesus Romero-Castillo booted a 15-yard field goal with 8:12 to go in the first quarter to put the Scots up 3-0.
Will Litton intercepted a Belhaven pass at the Blazer 45 yard line and on the Scots next offensive play, Miller threw a shot down field to a streaking
Karson Douglas for a 45-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked, but Lyon led 9-0 with 7:46 to go in the opening quarter.
Defensively,
Michael Wingo and Clear stopped the Blazers runner for a three-yard loss on second down and eventually forced a punt. In fact, the Scots defense continued to stand strong with key tackles from Litton and
Colby Barton. However, Belhaven was able to get a 38-yard touchdown run from Devin Daniels with 3:16 to go in the first quarter that cut the Lyon lead to 9-7.
Slayton Wheeler,
Keidrick Wooten and
Austin Swaim made stops for the Scots defensively and forced Belhaven to punt. And on Lyon's offensive series, Miller found
Clifford Washington for a 32-yard gain to get them out of the shadow of their own endzone. The drive ended on a fumble by the Scots at the Lyon College 40 yard line.
The next play, Blazer quarterback Tim Johnson threw a 40-yard touchdown strike to Jacobey James-Grace. With 10:10 to go in the first half, Belhaven grabbed a 14-9 lead.
When the Scots got the ball back, Miller completed a 20-yard pass to Douglas to get to midfield, but the drive stalled out. Five plays after a Lyon punt, Belhaven scored on a 62-yard run from Koble Blunt. With the PAT, the Blazers led 21-9 with 5:56 left in the first half.
With tackles made by Lyon's
Rene Dominique, Wingo, Clear, Litton, John Stockton,
Rylan Turks, Micha Morrison,
Jayland Kelly and Wooten, the Blazers managed to score again on a 1-yard touchdown from Johnson with 59 seconds to go in the second quarter. The PAT posted and the Blazers led 28-9 at halftime.
The Scots opened the third quarter with Miller hitting Brown for 25 yards to the Belhaven 49, then two plays later, found Douglas, who had 100 yards of receiveing in the game, over the middle for 11 more yards. After Miller fell on his own fumble for a first down, he threw to Douglas for a 24-yard touchdown with 12:05 on the clock in the period. The successful two-point conversion on a pass from
Eli Funck was called back and a high snap on the extra point left the score 28-15.
Belhaven drove the field and scored on a 1-yard run again with 8:46 to go in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked by Kelley and recovered by Clear. On the ensuing kickoff, Brown broke free for a 30-yard gain, but a holding penalty brought the ball back to the Lyon College 15 yard line.
After going four downs and out, Funck punted for the Scots. The Blazers eventually scored again in the period on a 35-yard pass with 4:15 to go in the third to make it 41-15.
The Blazers tacked on another touchdown as time was running out in the third quarter to go up 48-15.
