Childress scores 23 to lead seven Scots in double-figures in 121-86 win over MUW

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Fighting Scots scored the second-most points in the history of women's basketball at school in a 121-86 win over the Mississippi University for Women Owls on Tuesday night at Becknell Gymnasium in SLIAC action.

Ironically, it was December 12, 2022, exactly one year ago, the Scots put up a history-making 123 points against Bacone College in a 123-59 win at Becknell.

This time, Zharia Childress led the Scots (5-3, 2-1) with 23 points and seven rebounds. Stella Parker scored a personal season-high of 18 points, Savanna Lopez scored 16 points, Natalya Kaza added 15 points and Allison Byars scored 13 points and had 11 assists. Shawna Carlton scored 11 points and had six rebounds, Brooklyn Rowe added 10 points, Alexis Soloman scored eight points and Samantha Taylor had seven points and four steals in the win.

Lyon College shot 68 percent from the field in the first quarter and put up a 33-26 lead. The Scots outscored the Owls 34-15 in the second quarter and posted a 67-41 lead. 

The game was tied six times in the first quarter until Lyon went on a 13-2 run. Childress scored inside, Byars put in a layup, Kaza completed a three-point play, Solomon put in a basket and Lopez scored twice for a 33-22 lead. 

A three-pointer from Kaza made it a 10-point Scots lead early in the second period. Childress scored twice inside and Kaza made a three-pointer for a 43-28 advantage. Rowe hit a three-pointer, Parker scored in the paint, Byars scored and Lopez put in a jumper for a 53-34 margin. Childress scored inside, Rowe hit another three-pointer and Childress got another to fall in the paint. Childress completed a three-point play for a 67-41 Lyon College lead at halftime.

Lopez put in two baskets and Childress scored three times, then Rowe converted a layup and Parker scored on a jumper for an 81-48 lead with 5:18 to go in the period. Lopez scored off the fast-break and Parker connected on a three-pointer. Soloman scored inside, then Carlton put in a turnaround jumper and Taylor made a three-pointer to put the Scots up 93-63.

Byars scored two baskets in a row and Parker completed a three-point play to put the Scots at the century mark with 8:03 to play, 100-66. Kaza scored twice, Carlton got two consecutive scores and Parker hit a jumper for a 110-76 lead. Solomon made two free throws, Leilani Regino made a steal and passed to Parker for a layup, Carlton made a free throw, then put in a layup. Soloman scored and Carlton put in another shot for a 121-82 lead with 1:01 to go. 

The Scots will be in action on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Crowley's Ridge at Becknell Gymnasium.
