BATESVILLE, Arkansas -
Natalya Kaza scored 21 points, while
Savanna Lopez added 18 and 11 rebounds to lead the Lyon College Scots over the Hendrix Warriors 93-90 on Thursday night at Becknell Gymnasium.
The Scots (2-2) also got double-figure scoring from
Zharia Childress with 13 points,
Allison Byars had 12, nine assists to go with nine rebounds, and
Samantha Taylor scored 11 points and had six steals to lead Lyon College.
Stella Parker and
Brooklyn Rowe were close with nine points each in the victory.
Lyon led 20-15 after the first quarter and moved out to a 44-41 lead by halftime.Â
Lopez and Parker scored the first two baskets for the Scots, Kaza added a layup and Lopez hit again from the paint. Parker scored inside before Hendrix got on the scoreboard. Kaza hit another jumper from the wing, Lopez scored inside and Byars added two free throws for a 16-8 lead. Childress put in a layup and Lopez hit a turnaround jumper to put Lyon up by nine points, 20-11 with a minute left in the quarter, but Hendrix cut the lead down to five.
The Warriors went on a 9-0 run to start the second quarter and took a 24-20 advantage before Taylor put in a drive in through the lane. Following a Taylor steal, Parker drove the paint for a bucket and Kaza scored on a layup after she made a steal on an inbound pass. Kaza stole the ball again and hit a short jumper to put the Scots in front 28-27. After Hendrix retook the lead, Taylor made two free throws and Byars tied the game with a layup at 32-32 with 4:21 left in before halftime.
Byars connected on two more free throws and after the Warriors tied the game, Childress scored inside twice to put the Scots up 38-36. Childress made a steal and put in a layup and made a free throw to complete a three-point play, then Lowe knocked down a three-pointer for a 44-39 lead with 16 seconds left.Â
Byars made two free throws to get the Scots going in the third quarter and Taylor put in a layup off a Kaza assist. Hendrix tied the game at 50-50, but consecutive scores from Lopez and Childress gave the Scots a four-point advantage seconds later. After Lopez made two free throws, Kaza made two three-pointers in a row to put Lyon up by 10 points 62-52 with 4:05 left in the period. Kaza added a layup to give the Scots their largest lead 64-53. Hendrix closed to within five points, but Lopez scored off a fast-break and Taylor connected on two from the charity stripe to push the lead back to nine points. Parker made a free throw and Rowe drove the lane for a basket for a 71-62 lead.
The Warriors got with three points when Chlidress scored inside. Byars added a layup and Kaza connected on a three-pointer for a 78-70 lead with 8:23 to play. Kaza made two free throws and Parker put in a basket, but Hendrix came back to go ahead 83-82 with 5:47 to play. Lopez put Lyon back in front with two free throws, then added a jumper, but Hendrix tied the game at 86-86 and took the lead on a layup. That was before Taylor made a free throw and Byars made a jump shot in the lane. A steal by Taylor led to a layup from Rowe to make it 91-88. Rowe added two free throws with 17 seconds left to keep the Scots ahead by three points. That was followed by steal from Rowe, but a turnover allowed Hendrix a chance at a final shot that went wide of the basket at the buzzer.
The Scots return home on Saturday to face Ecclesia at 1 p.m.
