Israel Palmer scored 33 points and led the Lyon College Scots in an upset over the American Midwest Conference leading Columbia College Cougars on Thursday night 84-77.
The Scots (7-10, 3-7) also got 16 points from
Trenton Bell, 15 points from
Nikola SaSaroga and 12 points from
John Paul Morgan in the victory. Lyon College made 10-of-24 three-pointers in the game and hit 22-of-26 free throws.
The game was tied 4-4, 7-7, 9-9, 11-11, 13-13, 16-16 and 18-18Â before Palmer put the Scots ahead for the first time on a free throw 19-18. Palmer made a layup,
Luke Bridges scored inside, SaSaroga scored, Morgan put in a shot in the paint, but Columbia led 36-27 with 5:25 to go in the first half. From there, Palmer made a three-pointer, Morgan hit two free throws, Bell put in a layup, SaSaroga hit two free throws and Bell hit back-to-back three-pointers to put the Scots ahead 42-38 by halftime.
Lyon College led by 10 points early in the second half on a three-pointer from Bell, and a three-point play from SaSaroga. By the 9:36 mark, Columbia had come back to take a 10-point lead 67-57. SaSaroga hit two free throws and put in a layup, then Palmer made two free throws and a three-pointer. Palmer made a free throw and put in a layup on the fast-break. Palmer accounted for nine of the Scots 11 points in an 11-2 run that put them ahead 80-77 with 1:44 to play. Free throws from Palmer and SaSaroga secured the upset victory for Lyon.
