Bell scores 37 to lead Scots past MUW Owls

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Trenton Bell scored a season-high 37 points to lead the Lyon College Scots over the visiting Mississippi University for Women Owls (of the SLIAC) 83-79 on Wednesday night at Becknell Gymnasium.

Bell was 13-of-20 on field goal shots and made 5-of-9 three-pointers to go with 6-of-7 free throws. John Paul Morgan had 14 points and six rebounds and Israel Palmer scored 12 points and had five assists for the Scots (6-7).

Lyon scored 20 points in the paint, had 11 points off of turnovers, made 12 second chance points and got 12 points from the bench. The game was tied three times and the lead changed nine times. The Scots largest lead of the contest was nine points at the 10:38 mark of the first half.

Palmer made the first shot of the game for the Scots and it was followed by a three-point play from Morgan. Palmer put in another layup in the paint for a 7-2 Lyon College lead. Bell hit a three-pointer and Nikola SaSaroga got a dunk off an assist from Bell to put the Scots up by six points. After Sando Hill got a steal and a breakaway dunk, Bell hit another three-pointer and Hill added two more free throws to make it 20-11.
MUW came back to tie the game at 25-25, but Palmer made a three-pointer. The Owls answered with a trey to tie the game 28-28, but Bell canned a three-pointer for the lead. SaSaroga put in a layup and hit a turnaround jumper. Palmer's three-pointer with 4:21 to go in the half made it 38-30 Lyon College. Luke Bridges scored on a layup, but MUW came back to cut the game to three points. Bell's layup with 20 seconds left put the Scots ahead 42-37 at halftime.

Bell opened the second half with a mid-range jumper, but the Owls took the lead 45-44 on a three-pointer. Bell answered with a trey, but MUW tied the game at 47-47. Palmer made a layup and the Owls tied the game. Bell completed a three-point play, but MUW stayed close with a basket to stay within one point. Seconds later, the Owls made a three-pointer to go up 54-52. Bell put the Scots back in front with a three-pointer and Morgan hit a jump shot from the top of the key. Bridges scored again for Lyon, then Morgan completed a three-point play. Two free throws from Hill made a 63-58 lead, but MUW took a 64-63 lead with 9:28 to play. 
Free throws from Hill put Lyon back in front, then Bell got the lead back for the Scots on a layup. MUW went up 70-67, but SaSaroga and Bell scored consecutively to give Lyon a one-point lead. Morgan made a three-pointer and Bell made two free throws to keep the lead at one point, 76-75 with 3:44 to go. The Owls took a 79-78 lead with 2:26 left, but Bell made two free throws, Palmer made two free throws and Bridges sealed the win for the Scots by making a free throw with three seconds left.
