Scots fall to tournament host Philander Smith in final game

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Lyon College Scots volleyball team dropped three games in the Panther Invitational tournament at Philander-Smith College on Saturday.

The Scots lost in a 7 a.m. match to Langston University 3-1, then fell in a hard-fought five-set match to Freed-Hardeman from Tennessee 3-2. In the final match of the day, Philander Smith defeated Lyon College 3-0.

Against Langston, the Scots lost the first set 25-23, but bounced back to win the second set 25-19. Langston won the third set 25-19 and 25-16.

Kylee Sabella led the Scots with 11 kills, Paeton Tucker had nine kills and Samantha Ferguson put down eight kills. Sabella, Ferguson and Layla Wilson all had one ace serve. Berkeley Landrum led Lyon College with six blocks, while Isabella Beasley and Tucker had two blocks. Cassidy Garrett led the Scots in assists with 13, while Wilson had eight and Erin Haigwood added four assists. Haigwood led with 10 digs, Wilson had eight and Sabella had seven digs.

Against Freed-Hardeman, the Scots lost the first set 25-22, won the second and third sets 25-21 and 25-19, respectively. However, Freed-Hardeman came on for a 25-14 win in set four and won the tie-breaker 15-6.

Sabella led Lyon College with 18 kills, while Beasley added 13 and Tucker had eight. Haigwood had two aces to lead the Scots, while Landrum led with three blocks. Garrett had 25 assists in the match, Wilson added 11 and Madeline Hopson six. Sabella led Lyon College with 24 digs, Haigwood had 15 and Tucker had 13 digs.

The Scots dropped three straight sets to Philander Smith, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23 in the final match of the tournament.

Sabella led Lyon College with 10 kills, Tucker had eight kills and Natalia Szymanska had seven kills. Sabella served up three aces, Jayden Hughes had two and Garrett finished with a single ace. Ferguson was the leader in blocks for the match with two, Garrett had 13 assists to lead that category and Haigwood topped out with eight digs.
