LITTLE ROCK, AR. - The Lyon College Women's volleyball Fighting Scots defeated Jarvis Christian in their first game at the Panther Invitational at Philander Smith College in Little Rock.

The Scots overcame a first set loss, 25-17, to win two straight sets 25-16 and 26-24, but Jarvis Christian was able to come back and take the fourth set 25-21 to tie the match. In the fifth set, Lyon College outscored Jarvis Christian 15-13 to take the victory.

Lyon College (2-0) was led by Kylee Sabella with 15 kills, Isabella Beasley added 13 kills and Paeton Tucker had six. Cassidy Garrett and Tucker had four aces on serves and Jayden Hughes had one ace. Samantha Ferguson led the Scots in blocks with five, while Beasley and Tucker had one each. In other statistical information, Garrett led Lyon College with 27 assists, Madeline Hopson had 13 assists and Erin Haigwood added two. Haigwood led in digs with 16, Sabella had 15 and Tucker finished with 13 digs to lead the Scots.

As a team, Lyon College had 48 total kills over five sets, 32 errors and 154 attacks against Jarvis Christian.

In set one, Jarvis Christian jumped out to a 3-1 lead, before Tucker and Sabella put down back-to-back kills. An error on Jarvis Christian led to a Scots point, then Tucker served up an ace.

The Scots were up 7-5 thanks to another Sabella kill, but Jarvis Christian ran off 11 straight points to go ahead 16-7. Two more kills from Sabella and a kill by Natalia Szymanska led to an error by Jarvis Christian off an attack from Hopson to make it a 16-11 game. 

Later in the set, the Scots got as close as 23-17 on a Garrett ace.

In the second set, Beasley and Sabella had kills for Lyon College before Jarvis Christian tied the game. An attack from Haigwood led to a Jarvis Christian error and a block from Ferguson, led to kills from Sabella and Garrett for a 7-2 Scots lead.

Jarvis Christian got within one point, but two kills from Ferguson coupled with two errors by Jarvis Christian put the Scots up 11-7. Later in the set, Tucker served an ace and Beasley came up with two straight kills for an 18-12 Lyon College lead. A kill from Sabella and two more kills by Tucker led to a 23-16 lead and set up Garrett for a service ace and a forced error by Jarvis Christian.

With the match tied 1-1, Lyon College opened with a 5-0 run, behind two service aces from Garrett. Ashley Milligan got a kill for the Scots to make it an 8-3 game, but Jarvis Christian rallied to take a 16-12 advantage. 

Tucker got a kill and served up two service aces and Sabella got a kill to tie the set at 17-17. Another Sabella kill and an attack for a point by Hopson put the Scots up by one point, 20-19. Minutes later, Sabella tied the set at 21-21 with another kill, but Jarvis Christian was on the verge of winning the set, when they committed three attack errors. Lyon College took the third set 26-24.

The fourth set saw the Scots go up 5-2 on two straight kills from Beasley. Sabella added another kill seconds later, but Jarvis Christian tied it at 6-6. From there the set was back and forth with neither team getting more than a one-point lead, until Jarvis Christian managed to break out to a 20-17 advantage and went on to win by four points.

In the tie-breaking fifth set, Beasley and Haigwood led the Scots to a 3-2 lead early. After Jarvis Christian went up 6-5, Szymanska and Hopson both had kills to put Lyon College ahead 9-7. 

Jarvis Christian came back to tie the set at 10-10, but Berkely Landrum stepped up for a kill, then had a block assist with Beasley to put Lyon College up 12-10. 

Again, Jarvis Christian tied the game, but Sabella got two kills in a row and Beasley finished out the set with a kill, giving the victory to the Scots in a tough battle.
