BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College Scots baseball team is one win away from an outright American Midwest Conference regular season championship after sweeping the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans 13-3 and 9-0 at Fred Wann Field on Thursday.
The Scots (32-19) improved to 15-5 in the AMC with the win. Columbia College sits in second spot in the conference standings at 33-9 and 13-5. The AMC tournament begins next Tuesday in St. Louis, Missouri.Â
In game one of the Thursday's doubleheader, the Scots
Alan West hit a sacrifice grounder to third base that scored
Troy Strack for the first run of the game. Later in the first inning,
Alec White doubled in
Joe Weatherford fora 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Strack singled in
Chris Lara for a 3-0 lead. In the third inning,
Kaden Doan singled and advanced to second on an error by the Hannibal-LaGrange right fielder that scored White.
Evan Hylek singled in Lara and Doan. Strack tripled in
Derek Underwood and
Joe Weatherford doubled to bring in Strack for a 7-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Doan singled to bring in White and in the fifth inning. Underwood singled in
Haydn Finley and Strack.
Zane Wallace doubled to score
C.C. Burrup and Underwood for a 12-0 lead.Â
Clayton Burke picked up the win for the Scots on the mound.
Cameron Gordon came in to pitch for two innings and
Ian Jackson threw one inning.
In the second game,
Aaron Hurd doubled in Strack and
Jayden Cull hit a sacrifice fly to score Weatherford. Lara singled and advanced to second on an error that allowed Hurd and White to score, Doan singled to left field to score Lara for a 5-0 lead.
The Scots didn't score again until the bottom of the seventh when Underwood scored on a passed ball after stealing second and third. Lara reached on another error that scored White, then
Logan Doody singled in Lara and Strack hit a sacrifice grounder that scored Doan for a 9-0 lead.
Ayden Heitmann picked up the win with five innings of work.
Jordan Olivera pitched two innings,
Calvin Hedgepeth and Finley pitched one inning each.
The two teams meet again on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the last game of the conference series. It is also Senior Day for the Scots and the ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m.
