Scots women's basketball loses in first round of NAIA tournament

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -   The season came to an end on Friday afternoon for the Lyon College Fighting Scots Women's basketball team.
 
The Scots (27-6) lost a 74-67 first-round NAIA Women's National Tournament game to the Grand View Vikings at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
 
The Scots led 19-14 after the first quarter and built a 38-30 halftime advantage. Grand View came back in the second half to outscore Lyon College 22-15 in the third quarter to close to within 53-52, then the Vikings took the lead and on a 22-14 run.
 
Marleigh Dodson led four Scots in double-figures in the game. Dodson hit for 19 points, Kristen Baham put in 13 points, Paige Kelley scored 11 and Allison Byars added 10 points. Jade Giron was held to eight points, but dished out five assists. Mari Hannah-Newsom scored four points and Katie Turner added a basket.
 
The Scots scored 26 points from the paint and seven points off of turnovers. They had 10 second chance points and got 32 points from their bench.
 
Lyon College led 7-0 on a layup in the paint from Kelley on an assist from Newsom. It was Newsom's three-pointer with 4:51 to go in the first quarter to put the Scots up 14-5. After Dodson scored, Newsom added a free throw to keep the lead at nine points 17-8 at the 2:37 mark.
 
Grand View tied the game at 19-19 early in the second quarter, but Baham hit a three-pointer off an assist from Giron. Baham made another three-pointer on the next Lyon College possession to put the lead at one point 22-21.
 
Dodson scored four times in a row at short distance. Byars made a three-pointer with 1:28 to go before halftime to put the Scots ahead 35-27. Giron's free throw with 32 seconds left kept the lead at eight points at the break.
 
Grand View used a 12-2 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 4:10 to go in the third quarter. Baham made a layup to put Lyon College up by two and made a three-pointer with 3:11 to go in the period for a 47-44 Scots lead.
 
Giron and Dodson both scored, but Grand View made two three-pointers to close the Lyon College lead to one point 53-52 in the final minute of the third quarter.
 
A 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter put the Vikings up 59-53. Byars scored, but Grand View extended its lead to eight points with 4:24 to go in the game, 63-55. Giron made a three-pointer and Baham knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Grand View lead to one point, 63-62 with 2:20 to go.
 
Dodson completed a three-point play with 47 seconds to go to make it a two-point game, 67-65, but Grand View outscored the Scots 7-2 in the final 30 seconds.

The Scots were the American Midwest Conference 2022 regular-season champions.
