Scots hold off Spartans

Byars leads with 15 points

The Lyon College Scots' winning streak is 14 in a row after holding on for a 62-60 American Midwest Conference win over the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in St. Louis on Friday afternoon.
The Scots remain atop the AMC standings with an 11-1 conference record and are 19-4 overall.
In a game that was postponed a day due to hazardous weather conditions, the Scots were led by Allison Byars with 15 points coming in off the bench. Paige Kelley had 11 points and seven rebounds, Marleigh Dodson added nine points and 10 rebounds, Mari-Hanna Newsom had seven points and led Lyon with four steals. Jade Giron scored six points and had 10 rebounds, Kristen Baham added six points, Katie Turner scored five points and had five rebounds and Haley Wesley had three points.
The Scots were 21-of-55 from the field for 38.2 percent, they were 7-of-20 on three-pointers for 35 percent and made 13-of-17 free throws for 76.5 percent. The Spartans shot 24-of-62 on field goals for 38.7 percent, they made 5-of-18 three pointers for 27.8 percent and made 7-of-8 free throws for 87.5 percent.
Lyon College led 13-12 after the first quarter and outscored MBU 18-16 in the second period. The Scots opened up a nine-point lead by outscoring the Spartans 19-13 in the third period, but Missouri Baptist came back to outscore the Scots 19-12.
Baham made a three-pointer at the 5:29 mark of the second quarter to put Lyon up 7-4. The Spartans tied the game at 7-7, but Wesley hit a three-pointer for a 10-7 Lyon lead. Byars made a three-pointer at the 1:20 mark to go up 13-9, but MBU scored on a three-pointer to cut the Scots lead to one point by the end of the first quarter.
Byars scored seven straight points to start the second quarter for Lyon College. She made two free throws, hit a field goal and sank a three-pointer for a 20-14 Scots lead. Newsom hit a jump shot for a 25-19 lead, but Missouri Baptist came back to take a one-point lead with 2:26 to go in the first half.
Kelley scored in the paint twice to keep the Scots in front. Dodson put in a jumper in the paint to give Lyon a three-point lead at halftime, 31-28.
Baham made a three-pointer with 6:29 left in the third quarter to put Lyon up 36-32. Giron got her first points of the game on a three-pointer to keep the Scots in front and Newsom made a three-pointer to make the lead eight points, 42-34 with 5:42 left in the period.
Kelley completed a three-point play with a minute and a half to go and Giron was fouled on a three-point try and made all three free throws for a 51-42 Lyon College lead by the end of the third quarter.
Missouri Baptist fought back and outscored Lyon 12-2 to take a one-point lead, 54-53 with 6:06 to go. Turner put in a turnaround jumper for Lyon and Dodson completed a three-point play. Turner made two shots in a row to put Lyon up 62-57 with 2:47 to play in the game. The Scots did not score again and MBU closed in to within two points. The Spartans missed a game-winning three-pointer from the wing.
The Scots will be in action on Saturday at Hannibal-LaGrange at 1 p.m.
