Scots fall short against Harris-Stowe

BATESVILLE, ARK. -  The Harris-Stowe Hornets scored five straight points in the last 28 seconds of Saturday afternoon's American Midwest Conference game at Becknell Gymnasium and defeated the Scots 76-71.

Israel Palmer led the Scots (2-4, 0-3) with 14 points, Trenton Bell scored 13, Nikola SaSaroga had 12 points, while John Paul Morgan, Sando Hill and Juwaun Clifton scored 10 points each.

Lyon College scored 14 points in the paint, got 12 points off of Harris-Stowe turnovers and had eight second change points. The bench for the Scots produced 12 points and there were no fast break points in the game where the lead changed eight times and was tied five. 

Harris-Stowe led 4-1 and 11-5 early in the half. SaSaroga got a tip-in and put in two free throws then Clifton scored on a layup and SaSaroga made a jump shot for Lyon College. A technical foul against the Hornets allowed the Scots to make four straight free throws and a short bank shot from SaSaroga put Lyon College in front for the first time 19-18. Morgan made a three-pointer and added a short jumper for a 24-21 lead. Palmer scored, but the Hornets tied the game at 25-25 and 27-27. Harris-Stowe went up by one point on a layup, but Palmer made two free throws to give the Scots a 31-30 lead. Bell made a jump shot and HIll made a free throw to tie the game at 34-34 at halftime.

The second started with back-and-forth baskets from each team tying the score at 36-36, 38-38 and 40-40. Palmer sank a three-pointer for the Scots, Clifton put in a layup and scored again inside to keep Lyon College ahead. Clifton scored his third basket in a row, but Harris-Stowe came back to take a 50-49 lead.
Clifton made two free throws to put the Scots back up and Palmer dunked the ball. Hill made a three-pointer, SaSaroga made two free throws. The Hornets came back to take a 64-63 lead with five minutes to play, but Gavin Brunson put back in an offensive rebound to put Lyon College in front by one point. Morgan scored, Hill hit two free throws and Palmer made two free throws with 1:51 left in the game that put the Scots ahead 71-69. That was the last time Lyon College scored.
