BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College women's basketball Scots had a 16-point second-half lead dwindle away in a 73-71 loss at home to the Arkansas Baptist Buffaloes on Saturday morning.
The Scots (2-5) led midway through the third quarter, but were outscored 22-13 in the fourth period.
Mari-Hanna Newsom led Lyon College with 22 points,
Allison Byars scored 18 points,
Paige Tate had 12 points and
Kristen Baham added nine points. The Scots led 38-27 at halftime.
Byars started off the game with a three-pointer and Tate followed with a field goal. Byars added two free throws and Newsom hit a three-pointer for a 12-5 lead Tate scored inside and Newsom hit a shot, then
Savanna Lopez scored on a turnaround jumper, but Arkansas Baptist closed in to make it an 18-15 first quarter lead for the Scots.
Byars made two free throws and put in a jump shot, then Newsom hit two three-pointers in a row. Byars added two more free throws and Baham put in a layup. A jumper from Newsom made 34-25, then
Autumn Enote scored and Baham put in a bucket just before the end of the second period to make it 38-27.
After a couple of baskets for Arkansas Baptist to start the third quarter, Tate hit from the paint and Newsom put in two more three-point baskets for a 46-30 lead with 7:25 to go in the period. Tate scored again, but the Buffaloes put in a trapping press that caused some turnovers as they closed the gap to seven points. Tate made two free throws, Baham made a three-pointer and Byars scored. Lopez made two free throws for a 58-51 Lyon College lead.
Tate scored, but Arkansas Baptist closed the lead to three points with 7:32 to play, 63-60. Byars made a free throw, but the Buffaloes tied the game at 64-64. Byars completed a three-point play, but Arkansas Baptist tied it at 67-67 on a three-pointer. Enote scored and put in two free throws for a 71-69 lead at the 3:03 mark. The Buffaloes tied the game at 71-71 with 1:37 to play and won the game on a jumper with two seconds to go.
