The Lyon College Scots improved to 16-4 overall and 8-1 in the American Midwest Conference with a 65-53 win over the University of Health, Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.
Marleigh Dodson led the Scots with 19 points and 12 rebounds to earn a double-double for the game. She also had five assists and two steals.
Jade Giron scored 14 points and had nine rebounds and dished out eight assists.
Katie Turner scored 14 points inside for the Scots and had seven rebounds to go with four blocked shots.
Kristen Baham scored 10- points on 2-of-4 shooting from the three-point arch.
As a team, Lyon made 27-of-55 field goals for 49.1 percent, hit 9-of-25 three-pointers for 28.6 percent and made 7-of-8 free throws for an 87.5 percent average. The Scots had 34 total rebounds, nine of those on the offensive boards.
The Scots kept the Eutes top player and leading AMC scorer Grace Beyer under average of 32 points a game. She had 27 and Elizabeth Allanach was the only other UHSP player in double figures with 10 points.
The Scots held a 10-0 lead in the first four-and-half minutes of the first quarter. Turner put in a layup off the opening tip, then Dodson made a jumper and Turner hit another short bank shot in the paint. Giron scored on a drive to the basket and Turner got an assist from Mari-Hannah Newsom inside for an open field goal before the Eutes scored.
Baham made a three-pointer from the right wing for an 18-3 Scots lead. Dodson got a blocked shot and
Allison Byars got the rebound. Dodson made a three-pointer for a 21-3 Lyon lead and
Haley Wesley scored to put the Scots up by 20 off a behind-the-back assist from Giron. After a missed Eutes shot, Dodson rebounded the ball, passed to Giron who found Newsom open under the basket for a layup and a commanding 25-5 Lyon lead with 51.5 to go in the first quarter. UHSP scored six more points before the end of the quarter with Beyer getting inside for two layups to make it 25-9.
Giron scored the first points of the second quarter for Lyon on another drive through the paint for a layup. Beyer led the Eutes in a rally that got them back to within eight points, 29-21, but Baham put back an offensive rebound for a score and Dodson got a pass from Giron and hit a shot from the free throw line to push the lead back to double-digits, 33-21.
Later, Dodson added two free throws and Giron made a three-pointer, then completed a three-point play for a 41-29 halftime lead for Lyon.
Dodson scored the first four points of the third quarter and Baham hit a jump shot for an 18-point lead, 47-29. Turner made a turnaround jumper for a 51-31 lead with 6:32 to go in the period. Newsom made consecutive layups to keep the Scots lead at 20 points, 55-35. The Eutes came back to get within 59-42 entering the final period.
Dodson, Newsom and Turner scored for a 63-51 lead. Turner put in a jumper with 1:10 to go to put the Scots up by 14 points, 65-51.
