Corbett wins first place at York College Women's Open
Kelani Corbett took home championship of the York College Women's Open in York, Nebraska On Saturday, winning by tech fall over Emily Sandoval of Menlo College (TF 12-2) in the 191-weight class.
Corbett defeated Ryann Rumsey of Oklahoma University 10-0 in one period, scoring points in the first nine seconds of the match. Corbett defeated Jayleen Sekona of Colorado Mesa University 11-1 in the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket. She scored four points in the first period and shutout Sekona 7-0 in the second with a takedown.
In the semifinals, Corbett didn't take long to dismiss Kelly Lacost of the University of Jamestown And in the championship match, after falling behind 2-0, Corbett scored two points at the 2:22 mark, had a take down at the 1:09 mark and added six more points in the final seconds for a dominating 12-0 score over Sandoval in the second period. In the 123-pound classification, Lyon's
Ashley Whetzal made it to the championship round and finished in second place. Whetzal had a bye in the first round, then defeated Arianna Marrufo of Jamestown, 8-2 with a four-point maneuver at the 42 second mark to pull away. Whetzal defeated Kari German of Indian Hills 10-0 in the quarterfinals, she scored consistently for six points from the 1:59 mark to 1:51 and added four more on a fall to win the match
Whetzal defeated Devin Patton of Texas Wesleyan 12-2. After falling behind 2-0, Whetzal proceeded to get eight points in a row and finished off the match with a four-point score to win the technical fall. In the champoionship against Alana Vivas, she dropped an 8-1 decision for second place. Â
Alexandrea Banag lost her first match to Colorado's Mesa University's Kaylee Lacy, but Banag won four straight matches in the consolation brackets of the 143-pound class and made it to the semifinals.
Rebekah Garcia advanced to quarterfinals of the 136-pound weigh class.
Laura Lincoln won a match in the 109-pound class in the consolation bracket against Carisa Epling of Colorado Mesa 4-0.
