BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College women's soccer team suffered an 8-1 home defeat Monday night, at the hands of Texas A&M University-Texarkana to finish off Labor Day weekend.
A strong start from the Eagles of Texarkana saw them go two goals up before the 15-minute mark. The Scots seemed to have settled their nerves but just couldn't hold on until halftime, as the visitors managed to put a third goal on the scoreboard a few minutes out from the break.
The second half started in favor of the Fighting Scots. A beautifully whipped corner from
Abby Ponder almost beat the visiting keeper to her front post but unluckily enough was scrambled away. However, another corner in the 63
rd minute from the Scots'
Abby Ponder was this time met with a roaring leap from Lyon College's captain
Hailey Gonzales, who headed home a bullet into the top-left corner of the Eagles' goal, making the score 3-1.
Unfortunately, a quick response in the next 90 seconds from the Lady Eagles put a stop to a Lyon College comeback. Dulce Memije was on hand to regain control and slot a half-volley home into the bottom right. The last 15 minutes saw a hat trick of assists and a goal for Texarkana's Ariell Hopkins, seeing the game finish 8-1 at the final whistle.
The Lady Scots are now 0-3 overall for the season, while Texas A&M University-Texarkana moved to 2-0 overall.
Gonzales led the Scots with a total of seven shots and recorded her first goal of the season for her efforts.
Ponder secured her first college assist of her career.
Next up, the Scots will travel to Jacksonville, Illinois to try and rectify this weekend's tough results against Illinois College on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.
