BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College volleyball team opened up its Highlander Invitational with a split as the Scots won their first game of the tournament in straight sets over Centenary College before falling in three sets to Mid-America Christian.
The Scots now stand at 5-2 on the season and will face Jarvis Christian on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. before wrapping up the invitational against College of the Ozarks at 8:30 p.m.
Match One: Lyon 3, Centenary 0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-17)
After a kill by Isabella Beasley gave Lyon a 10-8 lead in the first set, the Scots used a 12-3 run to extend their lead to 22-12. Lyon capped off the set with a kill by Charm Henderson before an ace by Laney Blankenship and an attack error by CC gave the Scots a 25-12 victory in the first game.
The Scots jumped out to a 15-9 lead midway through the second set, but Centenary rallied back late and tied the score at 21-21 on a kill by Robin Lemelle. Three errors by CC and a kill by Layne Smith closed out the second set as the Scots took game two, 25-22.
Centenary kept things close against the Scots in the third set by Lyon closed out the third game on a 5-0 run and claimed the third game, 25-17.
Beasley and Smith led the Scots offensively with eight kills each, while Adia Sherbeyn registered a match-high 26 digs. Layla Wilson dished out a match-high 22 assists in the win.
Game Two: MACU 3, Lyon 0 (18-25, 19-25, 19-25)
Mid-America Christian jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first set before the Scots closed the gap to five points at 16-11 following a kill by Samantha Ferguson. MACU pulled away late in the set, however, and took game one, 25-18.
MACU scored the first four points in the second set and extended its lead to 14-6 before the Scots rallied back and trimmed the deficit to four, 14-10, on a block by Henderson and Ferguson. The Scots continued to hang with MACU, but eventually fell in set two, 25-19.
MACU raced out to an 8-3 lead to begin the third set, but the Scots responded back with an 8-3 run of their own and tied the score at 11-11 on a kill by Henderson. The Scots overtook the lead, 17-16, later in the set, but MACU closed out the game on an 8-3 run and earned a 25-19 victory.
Henderson led the Scots with a team-high eight kills, while Sherbeyn once again had another strong game defensively as she collected a match-high 24 digs. Wilson dished out a team-high 17 assists for the Scots.
