Volleyball Falls in Conference Opener Against CBC

The Lyon College volleyball team dropped its American Midwest Conference opener at home in four sets to Central Baptist College

BATESVILLE, Ark. The Lyon College volleyball team opened up the American Midwest Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon at home against Central Baptist College. The Scots came up short in their conference opener and fell to the Mustangs in four sets (14-25, 27-25, 26-24, 26-24).

CBC improved to 3-3 (1-0 AMC), while the Scots fell to 9-8 (0-1 AMC).

After CBC took the first set 25-14, the final three sets were decided by two points each. In the second set, the Scots jumped out to a commanding 10-4 lead before CBC rallied back to overtake the lead at 13-12 on a kill by Molly Murphy. After a Lyon College timeout, the two teams went on the exchange points before the Scots found themselves ahead, 20-17, on a kill by Charm Henderson. CBC once again rallied back and tied the game at 20-20 before the seesaw battle resumed. With the score tied at 25-25, the Scots took the final two points of the set following a kill each by Samantha Ferguson and Paeton Tucker.

CBC took a narrow, 12-9, lead midway through the third set before the Scots used a rally of their own to tie the game at 19-19 on a kill by Natalia Szymanska. The Mustangs pulled ahead once again and took a 23-21 lead before the Scots elected to take a timeout. Lyon responded with a 3-0 run out of the break but CBC finished off the set on a 3-0 run of their own and took game three, 26-24.

The Mustangs took the first five points of the fourth set and appeared as if they were going to cruise to a win in the set but the Scots battled back late in the set and tied the game at 20-20 on an attack error by CBC. The Scots found themselves ahead, 24-23, after a kill by Tucker but a CBC timeout broke the momentum for Lyon as the Mustangs took the final three points of the set and earned a 26-24 victory.

Laney Blankenship (21 assists, 11 digs), Erin Haigwood (22 digs, 16 assists) and Tucker (14 kills, 12 digs) all recorded a double-double each for the Scots.

The Scots will conclude their brief two-game homestand on Monday in a non-conference game against Cumberland University at 6 p.m.
