BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College volleyball team improved its winning streak to three games after the Scots defeated Philander Smith College in straight sets (25-14, 25-22, 25-18) at home on Monday night.
With the win, the Scots improved to 9-3 overall, while PSC fell to 7-4.
The Scots opened up the first set with a commanding 6-1 lead after a kill by Paeton Tucker and never looked back from there. Lyon extended its lead to 18-8 later in the set following an attack error by the Panthers before Natalia Szymanska finished off the set with a kill as the Scots took game one, 25-14.
Lyon earned the first four points of the second set before Philander Smith rallied back to overtake the lead at 14-12. A service error by the Panthers sparked a 9-3 run for Lyon as the Scots took a 21-17 lead. PSC managed to pull back within two points late in the set but a kill by Tucker gave Lyon game two, 25-22.
The third set started out as an evenly matched battle until the broke a 16-16 tie with a 7-0 run and took a 23-16 lead following a kill by Maria Eleni Bampiri. After a pair of attack errors by the Scots, Bampiri collected back-to-back kills to finish off the game and gave the Scots a 25-18 victory.
Four Scots – Isabella Beasley, Charm Henderson, Tucker and Bampiri – all finished with seven kills each to lead Lyon offensively. Adia Sherbeyn and Erin Haigwood led the Scots' back row as the duo finished with 23 and 15 digs, respectively. Layla Wilson dished out 19 assists, while Laney Blankenship finished with 18.
The Scots will return to action on Thursday on the road at Freed-Hardeman at 7 p.m.
