The Lyon College football team lost its home opener, 31-7, against Wayland Baptist

BATESVILLE, Ark. The Lyon College played in front of its home crowd for the first time this season on Saturday as the Scots hosted Wayland Baptist in a Sooner Athletic Conference matchup. A 17-0 advantage after the first quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Scots fell, 31-7.

Wayland Baptist improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Scots fell to 0-3 and 0-2 in the SAC.

Prior to the game, the local first responders were recognized for First Responders Appreciation Day. The Lyon College football team also retired the No. 19 jersey in honor of the late Ignacio "Nacho" Gomez.

Wayland Baptist jumped out to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter and added a two-yard touchdown run by Jacoby Hunt midway through the second quarter as the Pioneers took a 24-0 lead over the Scots into halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Wayland Baptist added to its lead with a three-yard touchdown pass from Nick Quintero to Justyn Harrison at the 9:18 mark in the fourth quarter to extend the Pioneers' lead to 31-0.

The Scots manufactured a scoring drive late in the quarter as Isaiah Bradford completed a pass to Reggie Brown for 10 yards before he found Xavier Long for a 24-yard pass the next play. Later in the drive, Bradford found Brown once again, this time for a 23-yard pass that set the Scots up at the WBU 39-yard line. Bradford then connected with J.D. Horn for a pair of passes one nine and 17-yards that put the Scots inside the red zone. Dakota Braswell capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown.

Bradford completed 15-of-30 passes for 142 yards. Brown caught four passes for 53 yards, while Horn caught six passes for 53 yards. Braswell finished as the leading rusher for the Scots as he carried the ball 13 times for 42 yards with the one score.

Defensively, Hunter Ballard and Chris Reese both collected a game-high 10 total tackles. Ballard also recorded 2.5 tackles for loss and one-half of a sack. He also forced and recovered one fumble.

The Scots will return to the field next on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
