O'FALLON, Mo. – The No. 4-seed Lyon College baseball team came up one game short of reaching the American Midwest Conference Tournament Championship as the Scots split a pair of elimination games on Thursday afternoon. The Scots defeated No. 3-seed William Woods, 15-8, before falling to No. 2-seed Missouri Baptist, 9-6.
The Scots finished the year at 24-23 overall following the split.
Game One: Lyon 15, WWU 8
A two-run home run by Joe Weatherford gave the Scots an early 2-0 lead over the Owls before Logan Doody hit an RBI double in the top of the second and extended the lead for Lyon to 3-0.
William Woods responded with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Alex Wimer before the Owls added four more runs in the bottom of the third and overtook the lead, 5-3.
It was a seesaw battle during the fifth and sixth innings as the Scots put up three runs in the top of the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth, but the Owls answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
The Scots broke the game open in the final two innings as Lyon pushed across five runs in the top of the eighth and three more in the top of the ninth and took the game, 15-8.
Ethan Denney earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Thomas Fletcher and Cameron Hockle finished the game with a scoreless frame each on the mound.
Alan West and Chris Lara led the Scots with three hits each in the win, while Weatherford knocked in four.
Game Two: MBU 9, Lyon 6
Missouri Baptist jumped out to a 5-1 after the first two innings before the Scots pulled back within one. Weatherford hit a two-run double in the top of the third before a solo home run by Hockle in the top of the fourth pulled the Scots back within one, 5-4.
Lyon took its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh as Hakeem Yatim started the inning with a walk. Yatim quickly came around to score on an RBI double by West. Hockle singled home West later in the inning and gave the Scots a 6-5 lead.
Missouri Baptist took advantage of an error by the Scots in the bottom of the seventh and overtook the lead on a three-run home run by Carter Mize. The Spartans went on to add an insurance run in the bottom of the eight and earned a 9-6 win over the Scots.
Fletcher controlled the Spartans for most of the game throughout his six innings of work, but was tagged with the loss as he allowed four runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out four.
West and Hockle led the Scots with two hits each in the game.
