HANNIBAL, Mo. – After scoring a combined 29 runs on 33 hits in the first two games of its four-game series yesterday, the Lyon College baseball team kept things rolling offensively and scored a combined 40 runs over the final two contests and swept its series at Hannibal-LaGrange. The Scots picked up a pair of wins today by scores of 8-5 and 32-9.
The Scots ended the regular season at 21-21 overall and 16-12 in the American Midwest Conference. Lyon will enter next week's American Midwest Conference Tournament as the No. 4-seed and will play the winner of No. 5-seed Central Baptist College and No. 8-seed Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday at 4 p.m. HLGU ended the regular season at 17-26 overall and 7-21 in the AMC.
Game Three: Lyon 8, HLGU 5
Both teams pushed across two runs in the opening frame of game three of the series before the Trojans took a 5-2 lead following three more runs in the bottom of the second.
The comeback began for the Scots in the middle innings as Chris Lara singled home Haydn Finley in the top of the third before Lyon pulled back within one on an RBI-single by Alan West in the top of the fourth.
A one-out single by Jake Michener followed by a walk by Cameron Hockle opened up a big inning for the Scots in the top of the fifth. Lara brought home Michener with an RBI-double before Alec White followed with a three-run home run later in the inning.
Nash Winters and Ethan Denney closed the door the rest of the way as the two combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief as Denney picked up the save.
Marcelo Terrazas earned the win on the mound after going four innings in the start.
West, Finley and Lara led the Scots offensively with two hits each.
Game Four: Lyon 32, HLGU 9
The Scots put game four away right from the get-go and scored 11 runs in the top of the first. Despite HLGU responding with two runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings, Lyon added 13 more runs in the top of the third and four more in the top of the fourth and cruised to a 32-9 victory in the series finale.
Austin Shipman went 5-for-6 with three RBI, while Joey Smith finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Hockle also had a big game at the plate as he drove in nine runs on three hits with three runs scored.
Cameron Gordon earned the win as he went three innings in the start. Jordan Olivera and Greg Gomez also added a scoreless inning of relief.
