CONWAY, Ark. – The Lyon College baseball team opened up its four-game series at Central Baptist College on Friday as the Scots won the first two games by scores of 11-3 and 6-4.
The Scots improved to 12-16 overall and 7-7 in the American Midwest Conference, while the Mustangs fell to 16-12 overall and 7-7 in the AMC.
Game One: Lyon 11, CBC 3
The Scots jumped ahead early in the series opener as Joe Weatherford drove in Troy Strack with an RBI-single in the top of the first. Strack added an RBI-single of his own in the top of the second before the Scots plated two more runs in the top of the third and took a 4-0 lead.
After the Mustangs pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Scots pulled away with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning.
CBC managed to score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Conor Kelly got the last Mustang he faced to ground out as the Scots took game one by a score of 11-3.
Lex Meinderts earned the win on the mound as he allowed one run on seven hits while striking out three over six innings pitched.
Tristan Buschow, Logan Doody and Strack all collected three hits and drove in two runs each to lead the Scots offensively. Jake Michener and Weatherford added two hits each in the win.
Game Two: Lyon 6, CBC 4
Just like they did in the series opener, the Scots took an early lead against the Mustangs in game two. Alan West started the rally with a one-out single before Haydn Finley got hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Weatherford followed with a three-run home run over the wall in right on the first pitch he saw. Michener followed up the Weatherford home run with a triple in the gap in right-center field before he came around to score on an RBI-single by Dustin Caplett.
CBC cut into the Scots lead with an RBI-double by Steven Stewart in the bottom of the first as the score remained the same until the Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Jay French.
The Mustangs pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the seventh before the Scots regained the lead in the top of the ninth. With two runners on and two outs in the inning, Strack hit a single to right to score the first run of the inning. The Scots added an insurance run later in the inning as Finley got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Nash Winters held the Mustangs scoreless in the bottom of the ninth as he earned the win in relief.
Strack, West, Weatherford and Michener all collected two hits each for the Scots.
The Scots and Mustangs will conclude their series with another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
