CONWAY, Ark. – After winning the first two games of its series yesterday, the Lyon College baseball clinched their series against Central Baptist College with a split in the final two games on Saturday. The Mustangs won game three of the series, 6-3, but the Scots bounced back in the finale and won game four by a score of 18-5.
The Scots moved to 13-17 overall and 8-8 in the American Midwest Conference, while the Mustangs now stand at 17-13 overall and 8-8 in the AMC.
Game Three: CBC 6, Lyon 3
The Scots put across two runs in the top of the first inning of game three as Jake Michener drove in the first run with an RBI-double before Tristan Buschow brought home another run with a bases loaded walk.
The difference in the game came in the bottom of the second as the Mustangs plated five runs in the frame.
The Scots were able to score another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI-single by Troy Strack but CBC added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and held off the Scots in the late innings.
Alan West suffered the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Thomas Fletcher tossed a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout.
Strack led the Scots offensively as he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game Four: Lyon 18, CBC 5
CBC took an early 1-0 lead over Lyon in the series finale as Kelvin Volquez plated a run with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first.
The Scots responded with two runs in the next half inning. After a single by Michener and a walk by Buschow, Evan Hylek loaded the bases after he got hit by a pitch. Strack followed with a two-run single to left and gave Lyon a 2-1 lead.
The Scots put the game away in the middle innings as Lyon scored five runs in the fifth, seven in the sixth and four more in the seventh. The Mustangs attempted to rally back in the bottom of the fifth as they plated four runs in the frame but the Scots won the series finale by the mercy rule, 18-5.
Cameron Gordon earned the win on the mound after tossing five innings in the game. Ethan Denney and Nash Winters both tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Joe Weatherford, Strack and Michener all collected four hits each for the Scots, while Derek Underwood added two hits in the game.
The Scots will return home for the final time during their 2021 season as they will host William Woods in a four-game conference series on Apr. 16 and 18.
