BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Lyon College men's and women's soccer teams took on the Williams Baptist University Eagles on Saturday. Although the women finished tied with the Eagles, Tavaris Wellington's late goal gave the men a 1-0 finish to win the game and the American Midwest Conference Championship title.
The history between the two programs goes back to the start of the Scots' soccer program in 2002 where they won their first game in school history over the Eagles. The men of Scots soccer took the Eagles into overtime with a score of 0-0 at the end of regulation on Saturday. Eight minutes into overtime, Marcos Fernandez passed the ball to Wellington for a goal to the center, giving the Scots their first AMC title in the history of the soccer program.
"I'm just really happy for the boys," said head coach David Groves. "They have committed so much time and energy to this program. They have persevered during tough moments and have understood that without hard work and a strong mentality, talent has its limits," said Groves.
Since Groves' hire in 2018, the Scots have played in the AMC Championship Tournament for three of the four years. After Saturday's win, his record as head coach became 44-22-4 making him the winningest coach in Lyon men's soccer history. The Scots finish the regular season with a record of 11-4-1 overall and 7-0-1 in conference competitions.
With the win, the Scots clinched the first seed in the AMC Tournament and will host William Woods at the Huser Field on Saturday, November 6. The first kick is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
"As a coaching staff," said Groves, "we will continue to push them to see what other achievements can come our way."
