HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Lyon College men's basketball team started out on a 6-0 run and pushed its lead to double-digits within the first five minutes of the game as the Scots cruised to a 75-50 American Midwest Conference victory at Hannibal-LaGrange.
The Scots improved to 1-2 (1-0 AMC), while HLGU fell to 1-8 (0-1 AMC).
Lyon led, 17-5, just five minutes into the game following a three-pointer by Grant Patterson before a four-point play by David Brown cut the lead to eight for the Scots. That would be the last time the Scots' lead would be in single-digits the rest of the way, however. Ray Price answered with a three-pointer that pushed the lead back to double-digits.
Lyon extended its lead to 39-19 late in the first half after a layup by Zalek Sharp as the Scots took a 43-34 advantage into halftime.
Cole Anderson opened up an 8-0 run for the Scots to start the second half before Lyon took its largest lead of the game at 61-31 following a three-pointer by Sharp just moments later. Lyon cruised the rest of the way and earned a 25-point win in their first conference game of the season.
Four Scots – Price (13), Faris Verlasevic (12), Winston Peace (11) and Anderson (10) – all finished in double figures scoring. The Scots had their best game of the season shooting from beyond the arc as the Scots finished 11-of-21 from three.
Lyon limited HLGU to just 34.1% shooting from the field and 17.6% from three.
The Scots will continue their road trip and travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri Baptist in another AMC contest on Saturday at 3 p.m. Fans will not be allowed at Saturday's game at MBU.
