BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 13th-ranked Lyon College baseball team scored 33 runs on Thursday afternoon as the Scots swept its doubleheader against Champion Christian College by scores of 22-10 and 11-5. Lyon improved to 20-6 on the season following the two wins.
Game One: #13 Lyon 22, CCC 10 (7 Innings)
The Scots used a pair of nine-run innings to pull away from the Tigers in game one of Thursday's twin bill.
Champion Christian took an early 1-0 lead over the Scots with a run in the top of the first in a sacrifice fly by Luke Farrar before Lyon overtook the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame. Kylan Barnett belted a one-out, solo home run to right field for the first run of the game for the Scots before Chris Lara added an RBI-single later in the frame.
CCC regained the lead with three runs in the top of the second before the Scots plated nine runs in the bottom of the third. Lyon added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Barnett before the Scots' offense exploded for nine more runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Tigers scored six runs in the top of the seventh, but the game was already well out of reach.
Morry Watson earned the win as he tossed three scoreless innings in relief while allowing just two hits. Watson also struck out two batters.
Alan West finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Troy Strack, Aaron Hurd and Barnett collected two hits each.
Game Two: #13 Lyon 11, CCC 5 (5 Innings)
The Scots scored 11 runs through the first three innings of the nightcap before the game was called after 4.5 innings due to the threat of inclement weather.
CCC struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first before the Scots responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Barnett reached on an error before West got hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on. Strack followed with a single to center to plate Barnett before Cole McSwain doubled to deep center to score two more runs and gave Lyon a 3-2 advantage.
The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the second with two more runs before the Scots responded once again with another three-run frame in the bottom half of the inning. Dustin Caplett started a one-out rally as he reached base on an error before he wound up on third following a double by Jake Michener. Barnett drilled his second home run of the day – this time, a three-run shot – and gave the Scots a 6-4 lead.
CCC cut into the Scots' lead with an RBI-single in the top of the third. Lyon put the game away in the bottom half of the frame with five runs on three hits as Cameron Hockle and Ethan Denney finished things off with a scoreless inning of relief on the mound. Hockle was credited with the win.
McSwain finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI, while Barnett and Michener collected two hits each. Barnett drove in four runs in the nightcap.
Tomorrow's games between the Scots and Tigers have been canceled.
