BATESVILLE, Ark. – The ninth-ranked Lyon College women's wrestling team hosted the seventh-ranked University of the Cumberlands this afternoon inside Becknell Gymnasium.
Before the dual, the Scots recognized their two seniors –
Vanesa Contreras and
Elissa Douglass. This dual was also Lyon's "Takedown for Troops" event to help raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project. The Scots and Patriots both fought extremely well throughout the entire match as the dual ended in a draw, 23-23.
With the hosts trailing 3-1 in the early stages of the match,
Brianna Ribucan-Leong pinned UC's Jaine Stephens to give Lyon an early 6-3 lead. The Patriots retook the lead on a tech fall, but the Scots quickly answered back.
Ashley Whetzal dominated UC's Ashley Tobe en route to a pin, and
Jasmine Hernandez secured a 6-4 victory to help the hosts extend their advantage, 14-8. Two consecutive tech fall victories by the visitors from Kentucky gave the Patriots back the lead, 16-15.
Lyon responded UC's consecutive tech fall victories with two of their own.
Elissa Douglass and
Kelani Corbett continued to impress on the mat as each Scot wrestler tallied a 12-2 tech fall victory to extend Lyon's lead, 23-18. UC's Angela Buenrrostro earned a victory via pin to end the match in a draw, 23-23.
