CONWAY, Ark. – The 11
th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team pulled away in the second half in a 66-51 American Midwest Conference victory at Central Baptist College on Saturday afternoon. The Scots improved to 23-2 (19-1 AMC), while CBC fell to 14-10 (10-10 AMC). The victory marked the 100th-career win for Lyon College women's basketball seniors –
Liz Henderson and
Madison Riley.
The Mustangs held their own against the Scots in the first half. CBC took a 14-12 lead over the Scots after the first quarter and extended their lead to 30-27 at the half.
The Scots came out hot to start the third quarter as Henderson knocked down a pair of free throws ahead of a bucket by
Katie Turner to give Lyon a 31-30 lead. Five-straight points by
Jade Giron extended the Scots lead to six before CBC scored its first point of the quarter on a free throw by Aaliyah Cash. Lyon added two points each by Henderson and Riley to push their lead to nine before CBC responded with a quick, 5-0, run to cut the deficit to four. The Scots scored the final six points of the quarter and took a 46-36 lead into the final period.
From there, it was smooth sailing for the Scots as Lyon extended its lead to as many as 18, 54-36, following a pair of free throws by Giron. CBC cut the deficit to 14, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would get the rest of the way.
Giron paced the Scots with a game-high 17 points, while Turner and Henderson added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Scots will return home on Tuesday night in a highly-anticipated matchup with No. 12 Freed-Hardeman. The Scots and Lady Lions will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. inside Becknell Gymnasium for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night.
