BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's basketball team rallied back from a 14-point deficit to earn a conference victory against Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday night inside Becknell Gymnasium, 72-68, in Lyon's annual Coaches vs. Cancer game. Lyon improves to 14-7 (10-4 AMC), while HSSU falls to 12-7 (8-5 AMC).
The Scots got off to a quick start after a basket by
Winston Peace gave Lyon an early 10-4 advantage over the Hornets. The Hornets trimmed Lyon's lead to just one point, 19-18, on a layup by Nick McKenzie with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. With 2:22 left in the first stanza, Christian Davis connected from beyond the three-point line to tie the contest at 31 apiece. A
Faris Verlasevic jump hook and two free throws from
Ray Price gave the hosts a 35-31 lead after the first twenty minutes of action.
In the second half, the Hornets quickly took back the lead and extended their advantage to 14 points, 58-44, on a three-point basket by Christian Davis. However, the Scots would quickly respond with a 19-5 run to tie the game at 63 apiece with 3:17 remaining in the game.
Grant Patterson dialed it in from long range during the big run as he recorded three made three-point baskets to lead the comeback. A steal and layup from
Hunter Daley gave Lyon their first lead since the opening stages of the second half. Deshawn Munson responded with a layup of his own to tie knot the game at 65 apiece with 1:30 remaining.
Winston Peace drove through the middle of the paint and finished a runner to put the hosts back up by two points with just over one minute to play. The Hornets would cut Lyon's lead to one point with 13 seconds remaining, but the Scots converted three of their final four free throws to secure the victory, 72-68.
Grant Patterson led the Scots with 13 points, while
Winston Peace scored 12 points and dished out four assists.
Dominique Loyd and
Jonathan Iliya each chipped in with 10 points. Lyon shot 46.7% from beyond the arc and held the NAIA's leader in scoring, Deshawn Munson, 10 points under his scoring average.
The Scots will continue their home stand as they take on Hannibal-LaGrange University on Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. for "Alumni Day."
