BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 18
th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team shot 73% (11-of-15) in the first quarter and rode that hot start to a 90-52 American Midwest Conference victory over Park on Saturday inside Becknell Gymnasium. The Scots honored the late Pat Summitt on Saturday as the contest was promoted as their "We Back Pat" game. The initiative, which utilizes promotional public address announcements, video endorsements and television exposure to share a very important message, focuses on raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease and The Pat Summitt Foundation's role in fighting it. The Scots donned "We Back Pat" shirts on Saturday.
With the win, the Scots improved to 14-1 and remain perfect in conference play at 10-0. The Scots improved their current winning streak to 12 games. Park dropped to 4-9 (1-9 AMC).
It was the
Jade Giron and
Liz Henderson show to start the game for the Scots as the duo combined for 17 points as Lyon led, 17-6, six minutes into the contest. The Scots got some production off the bench during the final two minutes of the quarter as
Alley Edwards,
Marleigh Dodson and
Kristen Baham all got involved in the scoring mix that Lyon gave a 29-15 lead after the first quarter.
The Scots extended took their largest lead of the half with 1:44 remaining in the second quarter on a bucket by
Madison Riley that gave Lyon a 47-20 advantage. Park answered back with a pair of buckets by Sarah Lamp but Riley split a pair of free throws that gave the Scots a 48-24 lead at the half.
Lyon cruised the rest of the way, outscoring the Pirates, 26-15, in the third quarter and 16-13 in the fourth and earned a 38-point victory.
Riley (19), Henderson (15) and Giron (15) all finished in double figures in scoring for the Scots. Riley just missed out on recording a double-double as she finished the game with nine assists.
The Scots will open up a four-game AMC road trip at St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
