BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Lyon College men's soccer team used a golden goal by
Marcos Fernandez to defeat Lindenwood University-Belleville by a score of 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
Lyon moves to 7-4 overall, 3-1 in the AMC, while Lindenwood University-Belleville falls to 5-3-1 overall, 2-2 in the AMC.
GAME FLOW
Both sides generated chances in the first half, but were unable to get on the board in the first 45 minutes. As the halftime whistle sounded, the match remained scoreless. Lyon outshot LUB, 4-2.
The second half was very similar to the first. The defense of the Scots and the Lynx excelled as neither side was able to break the tie. After 90 minutes, the score remained 0-0. The Scots outshot the Lynx, 5-1 in the second half.
In the first overtime, LUB would generate two scoring opportunities, but the defense of the Scots stayed organized and fended off any chances from the home squad. The match would remain scoreless heading into second overtime session.
In the second overtime, it was Lyon who would create the first scoring opportunity. In the 102
nd minute,
Estiven Garcia ran down a loose ball and delivered a perfect cross into the box.
Marcos Fernandez sprinted past a LUB defender and slid a shot past the goalkeeper, giving the Scots a dramatic 1-0 2OT victory.
