PARKVILLE, Mo. – The Lyon College volleyball team battled two non-conference foes today, but came up just short in both matches. The Scots were topped by Park University Gilbert in the first match of the day, while St. Ambrose University barely edged Lyon in five highly competitive sets.
Lyon is now 0-3 overall on the season, while Park University Gilbert moves to 3-1. St. Ambrose University improves to 1-6.
GAME FLOW
Park University Gilbert
The Scots jumped out to a quick 13-10 lead in the first set. Lyon extended its advantage at 15-11 following a kill by
Levia Taegtmeyer. However, Park University Gilbert rallied for six consecutive points to take their first lead of the game, 17-15. The Buccaneers used that momentum to close out the first set, 25-20.
The second stanza was a back-and-forth affair that included eight lead changes and several great rallies. While the Scots continued to put the pressure on the Buccaneers, PUG earned the most critical points of the match to take the second set, 25-21.
PUB took an early lead in the third stanza, but the Scots stormed back and took a 20-14 lead. However, the Buccaneers rattled off eight of the next nine points to regain the lead at 22-21. The Scots and PUB exchanged points until the Buccaneers closed out the match on one of Sabrina Garces's four kills in the contest.
St. Ambrose University
St. Ambrose used precise passing and powerful hitting to take the first two sets of this match. However, the Scots would quickly recover and punch back in the next two sets.
In the third set, the Scots held a 13-9 advantage following one of
Alley Edwards's 10 kills in the contest. Lyon would continue to impose their will against the Fighting Bees, en route to a 25-22 third set victory.
Lyon would continue to hit on all cylinders in the fourth stanza. While there were several lead changes in this frame, the Scots won the most important points of the set to knot the match at two sets apiece and send the contest into the pivotal fifth set.
Lyon roared out of the gates in the fifth set, taking an early 4-1 lead. The Fighting Bees, however, stormed back to tie the score at 12 apiece. While Lyon tried to regain the momentum and retake the lead, SAU proved to be too much this afternoon as the Fighting Bees won the final three points of the match to take the fifth set, 15-12, and win the match, 3-2.

- SAU tallied five more kills and committed seven fewer service errors than the Scots.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE SCOTS
Lyon travels to Searcy to for a road scrimmage against NCAA Division II Harding University on Aug. 27, before competing in the Panther Volleyball Tournament in Little Rock next weekend. The two-day tournament will take place at Philander Smith College on Aug. 30-31.
