Scots Split on First Day of AMC Tournament

Lyon Fell to No. 5 FHU and Defeated No. 8 MBU on Wednesday


COLUMBIA, Mo. – On the first day of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament, the Lyon College softball team fell to No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University, 2-1, and defeated No. 8 Missouri Baptist University, 5-4. 

Freed-Hardeman University goes to 23-12 on the year, 13-9 in the AMC. Lyon moves to 32-13 on the season, 17-7 in the AMC. Missouri Baptist University concludes their season at a 19-24 mark, 11-13 in the AMC.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Addison Harmon, Amber McMillan, Breanna Langford, Celsey Wood, Faith Cornmesser, Katelyn Platt, Kendra Kelley, Libby Shipp, Madison Sansom, Melanie Mooney, Mikayla Mullen, Sarah Jo Guerrero, and Shyanne Pedroza were named to the AMC All-Academic Team. Skyler Burke was selected to the AMC Champions of Character Team. 

Game One: Freed-Hardeman 2, Lyon 1
The Lions got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning. Morgan Crawford delivered a 2-run home run, plating Lily Bombard and giving FHU a 2-0 advantage.   
 
FHU would keep the two run advantage entering the bottom of the seventh. Cheyenne Black led off the frame with a single to right field. With two outs, Cheyenne Herrera slapped an RBI triple to right field, cutting the deficit to just one. The Scots, though, were unable to scratch across the tying run and fell to Freed Hardeman University, 2-1.
 
Katelyn Platt threw all seven innings, while allowing two runs. Offensively, Cheyenne Black led the charge for the Scots as she recorded two of Lyon's four hits.

Game Two: Lyon 5, Missouri Baptist 4 
The Scots opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. After a pair of singles by Cheyenne Black and Riley Shaw, Cheyenne Herrera belted a 2-RBI double to left field, scoring Black and Shaw. Siobhan Taylor, then, singled to put runners on the corners with one out. A misplayed ground ball allowed Herrera to score from third. With two outs in the inning, Faith Cornmesser delivered an RBI single to left field, scoring Taylor and giving the Scot a 4-0 lead.
 
The Spartans scratched a run across in the bottom of the second inning as MaKenzie Harbaugh led off the frame with a single and later came around to score.

MBU knotted the game up in the bottom of the third inning on three consecutive RBI doubles from Amber Moss, Ally Gischer, and MaKenzie Harbaugh.  

The score would remain tied at four entering the seventh inning. After Addison Harmon stole second base with two outs in the frame, Cheyenne Black delivered the eventual game-winning RBI double, giving the Scots a 5-4 victory over Missouri Baptist University on Wednesday.

Faith Cornmesser started the game in the circle as she threw three innings, while allowing four runs. Shyanne Pedroza, threw four scoreless innings in relief, while striking out one and earning the win. Cheyenne Black and Riley Shaw paced Lyon offensively as each recorded two hits, swiped a bag, and scored a run in the contest.  

UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS 
The Scots will continue play in the AMC Tournament tomorrow as they face the loser of No. 5 Freed-Hardeman University and No. 1 Columbia College at 2:30 p.m.
