HANNIBAL, Mo. – After dropping the series opener at Hannibal-LaGrange, 8-3, the 17th-ranked Lyon College baseball team came back with a vengeance in game two as the Scots scored 29 runs on 24 hits in a 29-9 victory. The two teams will play the rubber game to decide a series winner on Saturday afternoon at noon.
Lyon moved to 32-13 (16-7 American Midwest Conference) following the split, while HLG moved to 14-25 (6-20 AMC).
Game One: HLG 8, #17 Lyon 3
Lyon opened up the first game of the series with a run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead over the Trojans. In the top of the first,
Jake Michener led things off with a single before he moved up to third on an error by the HLG defense.
Kylan Barnett followed with an RBI-single to right field to plate Michener for the first run of the game. In the bottom of the second,
Zane Pritchard and
Reese Chovanec both reached base to start the frame before the pair moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Tanner Seibel. After a walk by
Ryan Clack loaded the bases, Michener drove in a run with an RBI-fielder's choice.
HLG stormed back in the bottom half of the second inning as the Trojans scored eight-unanswered runs. HLG scored at least one run between the second and sixth frames to take an 8-2 lead over the Scots heading into the top of the seventh inning. Barnett belted a solo home run in the inning, but that would be all the offense the Scots would get as HLG took game one, 8-3.
Marcelo Terrazas suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over four innings pitched.
Barnett led the Scots offensively as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.
Game Two: #17 Lyon 29, HLG 9
After dropping the series opener to the Trojans, the Scots left no doubt in game two to even up the series. The Scots started out hot right from the start as Michener and Barnett worked their way on base to open up the first inning.
Alan West followed with a sacrifice bunt to move both runners in scoring position.
Kyle West came up next for the Scots and hit a shallow fly ball to left that loaded up the bases for
Tristan Buschow. Buschow followed up with a two-run single before
Andrew Schnitzius drove in a run in the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to give the Scots a 3-0 advantage.
Lyon ran away with the game from there as the Scots put up nine runs in the second, two runs in the third and fourth innings, three runs in the fifth and 10 runs in the top of the sixth.
HLG added one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the game was already well out of reach.
Mack Larson earned the win on the mound and improved to 7-2 on the season.
Michener finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI and one run scored.
Dalton Ernest, Clack and the West brothers all collected three hits in the game, while Barnett, Buschow, Seibel and Chovanec all added two hits each.
